Cask conditioned at The Old Fourpenny Shop Hotel, Warwick. Copper to ruby with white head. Full and hoppy bitter, fresh malty roasty notes overlaid with a flowery, hoppy bitterness. Refreshing and lasting on the palate. Very pleasant indeed.

In bottle at home. Pours a dark amber colour with a rocky beige head. Aroma of mandarin, pine, lemon, caramel and yeast. Similar flavours and nicely bitter with heavy carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel. Not bad.

Bottle. Dark brown and red with a cream foam. Aromas are toffee with mellow berries and earthy notes. Bubblegum with low lemon and roast malts. Autumnal with bready yeast. Flavours are sweet toffee and chocolate with red berries and floral notes. Woody with leafy notes and a dry finish. Very decent.

Bottle. Bronze with a small creamy head. Malty with a medium body.Well bottled which was nice after an unfortunate experience that i previously had with one of their bottles. The maltiness is very pleasant and all round this is an above average bitter.

Cask (gravity dispense) at Egham Beer Festival on 18 August 2011. Certainly red. Excellent powerful hops - grapefruit and light resin US aroma but strong bitterness on the palate. Billed as a bitter but the US hops certainly make a good impression. again. Clean and quite firm, if fairly light mouthfeel although, overall, packs a decent punch for 4.5%. My first sighting of a Byatt’s beer and this was a very promising introduction.

500ml bottle from Alexander Wines, Cov. Clear ruby with a stable, lacy beige foam. Decent berry skin and cherry liqueur chocolate aroma with aniseed and dark sugar hints. Berries dusted with cocoa on the palate; soapy blackcurrant finish with some mellow nuttiness and aniseed for dessert. Decent, easy-drinking, hop-forward stuff; maybe a touch of roast and malt body to thicken it out and I’d score it higher.
