COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pasteurised nitro-keg and nitro-can beer.
"A smooth, creamy ale." Introduced in 1994 as a 4.8% Irish Ale by Bass at Caffrey's Ulster brewery, and promoted strongly with an advertising campaign of "strong words softly spoken". Interbrew took over in 2000, soften the recipe and attempted to catch the lager market, using a new promotion of "a storm brewing". Coors acquired the brand in 2002. Initially contract brewed by Interbrew for Coors at Ulster, the brand eventually moved to Coor's Tower Brewery in Tadcaster.

on tap. Poury golden amber with a thin whhite head. Light hoppy aroma. Very malty bitter, a bit flat and chewy. Kind of a crummy English ale.

Draft. Pours medium red with a creamy off-white head, good lacing. Nose is clean, soft, slightly metallic malt. No real hop presence here, just soft nuttiness, offset by copper. Palate is much of the same, very thick and rich in the mouth but profoundly boring.

[Nitrokeg at O’Neills, Reading] Pours amber with a moderate creamy nitrohead. It’s years since I last drank this, and I remembered it as being very bland, so I was quite surprised to find some flavour in there. Light malt aroma. Smooth (thanks to the nitro) but watery mouthfeel. Tastes initially a little lemon, then a sudden hint of honey before caramel and that fake squirty cream take over. The bitter metallics of pasteruisation once again ruin what might be an OK (if not great) beer. Better than most keg bitters though.

440 ml can. Pours amber with a small creamy white head. Some malt in the nose. Taste is weak malty, smooth mouthfeel, sweet aftertaste.

"Chill until blue" it says on the can, so I take it out of the fridge and put it in the freezer then I wait. I wait and I wait and nothing ever turns blue, I feel the can and it’s as cold as it gets without freezing, okey, time to serve. Beer is clear copper with a small white had. Aroma is next to nothing, perhaps light caramell and some minerals. Mouthfeel is smooth, pretty close to flat and watery. Flavour is a bit chemical with light burnt caramell notes, minerals and a nasty light bitterness lingering for a while. Not pleasant at all, then again, maybe I have to suite myself since I never let it turn "blue".

This poured from the can into a nice dark amber, and a good-sized creamy head. Aroma was a bit subdued although malt was in evidence. Taste was nicely malted, not overly so, and refreshing.

Can. Nice micro bubble head with good duration. Color is amber. Aroma and taste are caramel, malt and hops. Very smooth.
