COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pasteurised nitro-keg and nitro-can beer.
"A smooth, creamy ale." Introduced in 1994 as a 4.8% Irish Ale by Bass at Caffrey's Ulster brewery, and promoted strongly with an advertising campaign of "strong words softly spoken". Interbrew took over in 2000, soften the recipe and attempted to catch the lager market, using a new promotion of "a storm brewing". Coors acquired the brand in 2002. Initially contract brewed by Interbrew for Coors at Ulster, the brand eventually moved to Coor's Tower Brewery in Tadcaster.

Can, 44cl (4% ABV) - Clear amber colored beer with a small creamy off white head. Aroma is malty with fruity notes and with hints of caramel. Flavor is sweet malty with notes of dried fruit and bread. Lightly carbonated with a unique flavor, not overly interesting though.

On tap at The Brewers, Macclesfield. I love the Brewers but the beer is rubbish. Caffreys (the cold version here) was freezing cold. Gave me brain freeze. Wankers. Bronze colour with thick creamy white head. Very average. Malt and hops, watery mouthfeel. Light bitter finish. Low carbonation. Not awful but I’d rather not drink again.

On tap in Heathrow airport at "The Pub." This stuff was very simple but quite tasty. Amber pour with a frothy white head that held its own and left a bit of lace. Crystal clear. Flavor and aroma that included hints of nuts, roasted malt, vanilla, and oak. Smooth and creamy on the palate. Overall: perfect session beer. Very drinkable and totally inoffensive.

Another 20 minute dash to the nearest pub at lunch. Caffrey’s is a light amber brew that tilts on the darker side of amber. I got a subpar pour in an unconventional glass, but this is only the billionth time I’ve had it so I’m not worried. The cap is cream coloured, thick and usually quite plentiful (1/2 inch). So-so lacing. There is more aroma than you’ll find in Kilkenny, but it’s not super great by any means. Nice sweetness, a touch stinky, decent fruitiness, a slight spice too. Taste is sweet light fruity malt - more of a breadlike taste actually, slight tanginess and hardly dry. Needs more flavour for me since it came across on the empty side. The usual extra smooth mouthfeel, touch of sourness that dissapears in a flash and the only aftertaste is a lingering maltiness. Tasty and reliable.

Me thinks this is a old old keg of beer, not nearly as good as I remember I shall review again, but for now I’ll shall do the review off of the two pints I had for lunch. When the beer arrived to me from the waitress almost all head had already vanished just a ring of bubbles where left floating on the edges of the glass, the body of the beer was a crystal clear honey brown to rust in color. Smell was all right mostly I was picking up banana and caramel malts, and have you ever tried to smell a beer when your out with coworkers and try not to let them notice that your sniffing your beer, it’s hard (my co-workers don’t understand my passion for beer). The taste is where old keg syndrome comes into effect, very bready, stail, and very soft watery almost completely flat mouth feel, if you can get past that ( this is the only reason I ordered a second one ) you can pick up a slight hop flavor and some sweet roasted malts, it finished with a slightly bitter after taste. Like I said I think I got a very old keg, so I won’t be giving the beer the numbers it deserves, I truly believe this beer can be excellent example of the style just not from the sampling I’v had today.

440mL can, from the LCBO’s lonely singles bin (it’s kind of like Lavalife or E-harmony, but, you know, without any of the people). Who really knows how long this one’s been kicking around. I figured, hey, it’s not just a tick rating, it might actually be drinkable! And alas, it was. Nice deep golden nitro pour, almost exploded out of the can though, I guess months of being shaked in various ways doesn’t bode well for canned beer. Aroma is basically just simple Brit malt structure with some hoppiness, decent. Flavour is nice and smooth, not overly carbonated as you would expect from a nitro’d beer, which is actually something I tend to appreciate, lack of carbonation. Same simple malts and a nice dry hoppy bitterness in the finish. Very simple, drinkable, not to challenging, I think it would make a great transition beer for non-beer geeks. Enjoyable for what it is.

Keg (Kaunis Kampela, Helsinki)
Orange, keggy head. Aroma’s malt, I guess. Palate is simple maltiness. Taste - I guess there’s some beer here. Won’t kill me, but just oh so blah...
