COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pasteurised nitro-keg and nitro-can beer.
"A smooth, creamy ale." Introduced in 1994 as a 4.8% Irish Ale by Bass at Caffrey's Ulster brewery, and promoted strongly with an advertising campaign of "strong words softly spoken". Interbrew took over in 2000, soften the recipe and attempted to catch the lager market, using a new promotion of "a storm brewing". Coors acquired the brand in 2002. Initially contract brewed by Interbrew for Coors at Ulster, the brand eventually moved to Coor's Tower Brewery in Tadcaster.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2008 50 cL can. Pours clear orange with a creamy white head. Mild creamy malt aroma. Flavour is mild acidic with a light caramel note. Smooth and creamy flavour and mouthfeel. Goes into a light acidic and bitter malt flavoured finish.5-3-5-3-11=2.7

From tap at Den Engelske Fredericia as Thomas Caffreys Irish Ale. Pours clear and golden orange with a dense off-white head. Mild caramel and slight toasted aroma. Smooth mouthfeel with almost no carbonation. Flavour starts with a light fruity note. Medium dry and bitter flavour with a dry and vague malt base. Ends with a light fruity hops bitterness. Nice and smooth although nothing special.6-3-5-3-12=2.9

Bottle. [Courtesy of yespr, thanks buddy] Average fine bubbled white head that mostly diminished. Clear golden colour. Fair display of lacework. Aroma of corn, grass, grain. Over the palate came mild grass and herbal hops. Light bodied with a soft carbonation and mild dry texture. Light sweet and bitter flavour. Light dry and bitter finish.

Served from the can. Pours well with a nitro assisted thick and very creamy head. Body is very clear and is copper in colour, about right for the style. Boring nose of slightly stale malts and a hint of bitterness that I sometimes see on Australian ’bitters’ (ie pale lagers). Palate is very soft and smooth but lacks interest and bite. The faintest of fruit runs through the palate along with the aforementioned dull bitterness. I think I really struggle with cans.

On tap. Very nice white thick head, copperish colour. Palate is smooth with very low carb. Both aroma and flavour are very plain: peculiar ammonium chloride / licorice taste, otherwise watery.

[as Caffrey’s Cold]
Pours light golden with a truly magnificent creamy off-white head. Super duration. Aroma is sweet toffee, light malts. Very creamy, but feels a little artificial, as it feels a bit thin at the same time. Thin flavour, light caramel. Rather dull.

I tried this beer on March 15, 2008 at ’McCabe’s Irish Pub’ in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. The beer was a nice translucent orange/gold colour with a thick, creamy white head that lasted throughout the experience. The aroma was primarily malt with a slight hoppish hint. The mouthfeel was thick, and creamy, with very light carbonation. When taking into account the lack of carbonation, the flavour was nothing more than malted water. One could easily drink 5-6 of these as they go down easy................on this day, one was enough for me.

Canned. @ Lanzarote. Aroma has some floral hoppiness, not very strong. Clear, copper-golden coloured with a lasting, creamy thin head. Taste is slightly bitter, slightly sweet and has nutty maltiness and flowery hops. Watery and not a strong taste. Good lookin’ but weak in aroma and taste.
