COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pasteurised nitro-keg and nitro-can beer.
"A smooth, creamy ale." Introduced in 1994 as a 4.8% Irish Ale by Bass at Caffrey's Ulster brewery, and promoted strongly with an advertising campaign of "strong words softly spoken". Interbrew took over in 2000, soften the recipe and attempted to catch the lager market, using a new promotion of "a storm brewing". Coors acquired the brand in 2002. Initially contract brewed by Interbrew for Coors at Ulster, the brand eventually moved to Coor's Tower Brewery in Tadcaster.

On tap somewhere in Toronto. Clear amber color with a nito induced cream colored head. Practically no aroma, what was there was a bit malty, lacking in hops. Flavor doesn’t fare much better, faint toffee mostly. Very empty. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy as to be expected, however it is pretty light and again, empty. I guess if you want flavorless beer with no character to slug down pint after pint with very little effort I’d say this is your beer.

44 cl can. No yeast in bottom. Amber colour with a fantasic creamy head. Very little aroma of hops. Nice flavour of fruit from the hops and hints of caramel, this beer have a low carbonation.

lager but bitter, tastes a bit like watery not fizzy lager and has much the same appearance. Boddingtons is better, but its drinkable.

UPDATED: SEP 17, 2007 Draught at The 1870 Huntsman Pub (Torino).
Extremely creamy foam, fine and much persistent one. Dark orange color, smooth and lightly hazy. Bitter scent, braced malty and filled with smoke wood rumors. Much dry taste, cleaned up and with a much bitter end. Balanced and persistent.

Bland. Very bland. If you do make a huge effort to taste the various flavours that are there, it is OK, but it takes a lot of concentration. Good beer to give someone that doesn’t like beer. Kudos for making a "gateway" beer.

No4 in a canned "draught" tasting. This was the best of a VERY bad bunch. This at least had something on the nose. Overall the 4 beers ( Velvet, Boddingtons, John Smiths & Caffreys) were very poor, with no discernible character. I did have a can of Tetleys to try as well, but 4 beers of such momumental blandness was more than enough for me. I brought my palate back to life with a Franziskaner hefeweizen..lovely!

A once heavily promoted ale that has now settled into a low cost high profit brand available in many outlets, especially hotels and cinema bars where expectation of quality beer is not high. The beer is wet, cold, nitro smooth and alcoholic; and for many non-discriminating drinkers that is enough. There is some vaque white sugar and fructose sweetness and a bitterness that is more wet cardboard than hops. This is simply bad beer, for which the best that can be said is that the unpleasant flavours are mild enough to be ignored.
