COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pasteurised nitro-keg and nitro-can beer.
May alse be / have been produced at Tadcaster.
"A smooth, creamy ale." Introduced in 1994 as a 4.8% Irish Ale by Bass at Caffrey’s Ulster brewery, and promoted strongly with an advertising campaign of "strong words softly spoken". Interbrew took over in 2000, soften the recipe and attempted to catch the lager market, using a new promotion of "a storm brewing". Coors acquired the brand in 2002. Initially contract brewed by Interbrew for Coors at Ulster, the brand eventually moved to Coor’s Tower Brewery in Tadcaster.
The ABV was reduced from 4.8% to 4.2% in 2001 and, in March 2010, was further reduced to 3.8%. ABV may vary in export markets.

UPDATED: JUN 23, 2003 My can (bought in Norway, ABV 4,8%) says 'Premium Irish Beer', but surely this must be more or less the same thing?? An easily drinkable ale, perhaps not all that much character, but good, GOOD (not great). I don't hate nitro cans, but would like to sample this one on tap. (Maybe I have, without noticing....) Rerate: ABV 4.2% version, 440 ml can says "Premium beer" but this is clearly the same stuff, just a little more watery version. Very smooth.

Burk från Systembolaget. Fantastiskt snygg bärnstensfärgad vätska med gräddigt skum men det är tyvärr det enda roliga med den här. Besviken!

Nitro can 440 ml at home, poured into a big Guinness glass, ABV 3.8% Deep copper orange to light amber, small creamy head, off-white in colour, with very good retention actually, leaving light lacing behind. Malty aroma with some caramel and light toffee, all very faint. Taste of some malts and caramel, also some herbal notes on the finish, nothing exciting but it still manages to satisfy. Thin body with low carbonation, nice and creamy on the palate. Average beer but still it drinks nice. Nothing to write home about though.

No taste whatsoever. Weak consistency but still totally under my expectations. Bitterness is completely nonexistent.

På burk från systemet. Fin bärnstensfärgad med tunn skumkrona. Luktar svagt av säd och bröd. Såg lovande ut men smakar ingenting.

On tap, I was under the impression that this was a cream ale, which I still believe is the correct style category, but anyways...Thick draft Guinness-like head, thin aroma of banana, grass, hay, some vanilla. Taste is equally thin and lager-esque. Nothing interesting or exciting, I actually had this one to better my knowledge of cream ales, so slightly confused and disappointed to see it labeled as a bitter.

OLD NOTES SEP 22, 2004 Nitro can. Pours with an amber body with a trademark creamy nitro head. Light nutty caramel aroma. Smooth body, buttery sort of malt flavour. Has hints of sweet caramel with a slight bitter touch. Pretty basic.

Pink-tinged amber, clear and still, with white creamy nitro head that lasted well. Aroma is fresh hops and honey, simple but nice. Taste only of simple malts. Flat, thin, and watery on palate; guess the typical for the style. Overall just felt unsatisfied. Curious to jump into a time machine and taste the original brew.
