COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Dry hopped.
NOTE: ONly ratings for the cask version should be entered here. The pasteurised version, available in kegs and cans, has a separate listing.
A Gold medal winner in the international brewing industry awards 2000, and a three times bronze medal winner at the Great British Beer Festival in the Best Mild category, this is a smooth, full flavoured, truly dark mild with a rich creamy head. It has a full body and distinctive roasted malt taste, balanced by its fresh hop character. Complex flavours and aromas are achieved by blending deeply roasted malt and adding a selected blend of English hops, including dry hops, to the cask conditioned beer.

Cask at GBBF 08. Looks great - completely opaque black with a lush cream head (like a certain well-known stout, but smaller). Lots of raisin and roasted malt on the nose and in the flavour. Very smooth and drinkable.

First tasted this in the Hogshead, Paisley in October 1999. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull black in colour with a thin creamy tan head. Roast malt in the strong lingering aroma. Creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give plenty of flavours with roast coffee, bitter chocolate, caramel, and raisins. Dusty hops give a dry bitter tang to the dry aftertaste with a touch of liquorice and ash. Finish is well balanced with sweet currants evident. An excellent session mild.

Draft Nitro head settles down quickly. Dark brownish black. Thin tan head does not last. Watery mouthfeel. I HATE Guiness and this is only slightly better. Toasty burnt coffee flavor is faint. Easily forgettable and not really enjoyable or something I will look for again. Weak.

I should have said I already had tried this one. It was not so special, nice nut taste but a little wtery and biter. Had it at GBBF 2008.

Cask at the Dispensary, Liverpool. This strikes me as a textbook mild; it’s impossible to fault it, but nothing about it is outstanding or especially memorable. It’s dark brown in colour a smooth body and flavours of dark fruit, chocolate and roast malt.
