This strong brown ale is brewed to a 19th century recipe and fermented in traditional open vats. A blend of premium ale malts and the finest of English hops combine to produce a fruity and complex character.

Brown, smooth; malty, nutty, not so fruity, dry toasty notes...a little thin and I miss the Cain’s yeast notes.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before Apr 2008, drank March 2007. Neck label tells me it is the official beer of, 08 Liverpool European Capital of Culture. Poured into a Gordon’s thistle glass (twice). A dark ruby red, sparkling. clear looking body, with a small light brown head, which sadly disappeared far to quickly, to leave next to nothing worth calling a head. Burnt caramel and malted barley aroma, but nothing special. For a 5.0% brown the flavours just weren’t there, fizzy Newcastle Brown taste is the best I can come up with. The rear label states it has a fruity and complex character, I couldn’t detect that at all. Fairly dry aftertaste, but with a metalic feel to it. As the beer warmed a little (in the second pour), I started to enjoy the beer more, but it is still a long way from a really good brown ale in my opinion.

500ml bottle, proper brown with a beige head. Toffee and ripe fruit, I think "robust" is the word. No too challenging, but enjoyable throughout.

Deep reddish-brown color with tiny head. Sweet aroma. Flavor is slightly bitter. Decent end easy drinkable brown ale.

Bottled (2nd CS/ES Beer Gathering, thanks JP!). Rubyish brown colour with a mediumsized beige head. Aroma is nutty, malty, mildly chocolay along with some floral hoppyness. Flavour is quite similar along with some berries and mild metallic notes.

Dark brown color, almost black. Thin creamy layer of foam. Light aroma of roasted malt. Strong flavor of roasted malt, too much burnt malt and ashes, very dry mouthfeel. Too extreme for me, in the wrong direction. The final is very ashy.

[500ml bottle, Booth’s Preston] Nut brown beer with a thin white head. Malty, slightly sweet aroma. On the palate, fairly thin, but slightly fruity. Finishes with a bitter aftertaste. Some treacle in there. Not amazing, but does the job [18022008]
