COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
Previously known as Doctor Duncans IPA.
NOTE: Only ratings for the cask version should be entered here. The pasteurised version, available in kegs and cans, has a separate listing.
Did you know that IPA stands for Indian Pale Ale, and that it was originally brewed for sale in India, becoming popular in the UK following a shipwreck in the Irish Sea in 1827, when barrels of IPA were auctioned off in Liverpool? IPA is one of Cains’ best selling cask ales: a refreshing session beer, with a subtle hop aroma and a light, yet full flavour.

[Cask at GBBF 2004] An amber beer with a fine light brown head. The aroma is sweet and slightly hoppy as well as caramelic. The flavor is sweet malty with light notes of caramel - but where is the hops? This is not an IPA - but a bitter as it is listed.

Sold as Cains IPA. Cask conditioned. A really thin and boring brew. Weak aroma. Weak flavour. Not hoppy at all.

Cask@GBBF04’. Pretty dull IPA. Flat, sweet mouthfeel, some hops, but more on the malty side, sweet grains. Not much flavour and absolutely zero bitterness.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2010 Musty aroma, but a lot of hop character in the background. Nice copper colour, but very dull in the mouth and sharp on the finish. A bog standard acceptable, but rather boring session bitter. Cask, Battersea Beer Festival as Doctor Duncans IPA.

Cask Conditioned, at the Battersea Beer Festival, 2004.
Golden with white frothy head. A moderate bitter with clean, clear finish but there’s nothing distinct or defining about this weak bitter.

Cask Fresh @ Elephant & Castle, Elephant & Castle. Amber session bitter with a tasty hit of orange fruit. Medium to thin bodied - quite crisp and refreshing. Minimal hops taste stale and soggy. Reasonable.

Cask Conditioned at Dr. Duncans, Liverpool. Golden amber in colour, good white head. Full of hops as it should be, probably a little sweet for a true IPA but nevertheless refreshing.
