COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
Previously known as Doctor Duncans IPA.
NOTE: Only ratings for the cask version should be entered here. The pasteurised version, available in kegs and cans, has a separate listing.
Did you know that IPA stands for Indian Pale Ale, and that it was originally brewed for sale in India, becoming popular in the UK following a shipwreck in the Irish Sea in 1827, when barrels of IPA were auctioned off in Liverpool? IPA is one of Cains’ best selling cask ales: a refreshing session beer, with a subtle hop aroma and a light, yet full flavour.

A Mes rate: Cask at The Swan in Liverpool. Amber colour. Smells of sweaty bikers or is that just the influence of the Swan creeping in? (Honestly I like the Swan) Very odd note of salt and vinegar chips in the flavour. Strange stuff.

Cask, Egremont Ferry, Wallasey. Clear amber colour with a small white head. Muted nose with some vague fruit notes. Lacklustre flavour with some sweet malt and very muffled hop. Drinkable but insipid and nowhere near hoppy enough to be considered an ipa. Disappointingly below par. Go for the tt landlord if you’re ever at this spot with its great views of the mersey.

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2012 On tap at Brewpub, Liverpool. Light amber colour with a small white head. Mild fruity aroma. Light fruity and some caramel in the flavour. Hellloooo where are the grape nose, grrrrrr. Typical mild british IPA. Refreshing and easy drinkable

Cask at the brewery tap. Weak fruity aroma. Almost clear amber colour. Small creamy white head. Only a tiny amount of aroma hops. Rough bitterness in the finish.

It’s dark amber with a creamy head, and the aroma has notes of caramel and fruit. The flavour is light to moderately sweet with notes of caramel, fruit and the finish is dry and slightly bitter. It’s uncomplicated and easy to drink.

[cask at 2009 GBBF, Earl’s Court] Unusual one this – dark amber/copper coloured, almost no hop aroma, extremely subtle on the nose – and on the palate too. It was extremely creamy, almost like drinking a widgeted canned bitter. Having said that, it wasn’t really bad – just an average beer masquerading as an IPA. Less hoppy than Greene King IPA, which is saying something [05082009]

Cask conditioned handpump Malt Shovel Northampton. A copper coloured beer with an off-white puddle of head and lace. Pretty nasty to be truthful. Fruit skins and pondwater in the nose. Some citrus fruit makes a slight appearance at the back of the throat but it’s tenuous amongst the dross.
