3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Svesse (4389) - Hässelby, - MAY 3, 2007
(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Black colour with pale brown frothy head. Roasted nose with notes of chocolate, coffee, liquorice and something slightly smokey, tarry hanging in the background. Roasted taste with chocolate, coffee, moccha, blueberries and some tarry hints of liquorice. Some lactose sweetness. Very tasty, but the low abv and velvety body makes it very smooth and enjoyable. A really nice stout.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Scopey (1659) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 19, 2012
Bottle from Dunnottar Wine and Spirits. It pours very dark brown, with a massive light tan head. The nose is roasted malt, smoke, milk chocolate and charcoal. The taste is caramel milk chocolate, roasted malt, charcoal, toffee, ash and a touch of smoke, with a dry-roasted finish. Sweetness balances out some background acidity. Easy drinking and flavoursome. A Scottish classic.
3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 WeissGary (22) - Arbroath, SCOTLAND - MAY 12, 2012
A very good Scottish stout from an amazing brewery! Black Gold has quite a chocolatey coffee aroma. A soft coffee and chocolate tasting drink with hints of a bitter aftertone. Quite a flat bodied beer with a thin head which dissipates fairly quickly.
Overall a fantastic beer, reasonably priced and easily found. This is a regular buy for me, I’d suggest checking it out if your into a nice heavy ale.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 1, 2012
April 2009: 500ml brown bottle with a life of 12 days left before it had to be drunk.
Poured into a Thistle shaped ’Gordon Finest Golden’ glass (twice).
Looked good on both pours at first, dark, very dark ruby red body with a tanned head that sadly faded fairly quickly to not even a full collar or wisp, shame really, because I like a good head on my beers no matter what style they are supposed to be.
Chocolate aroma at first, then liquorice and toasted maltloaf.
A little fizzy for a stout, and a bit thin in the mouthfeel too, but not unpleasant at all. All the aroma hints come out in the taste with a burnt dryness overcoming the initial sweet chocolate feel I detected.
Overall not bad, but it is obviously a lot better in its cask form because this wouldn’t have won ’Best Cask Beer of Scotland’ in 2005.
