A Scottish stout with a wonderful rich dark colour. A smooth full bodied beer with subtle bitterness giving way to late sweetness and underlying roast barley hints.

Cask @ JDW Elgin [030213]
Jet black, thin ruby edges, dense rich dark tan head with very good lacing
Aroma of rich smooth dark malts, very soft mellow roast, dark toffee malts, touch of treacle, very smooth
Taste - rich smooth velvety fairly sweet dark malts, very soft mellow roast, dab of soft very dark rich chocolate toffee, hint of dark fruit, milk sugars, hint of coffee, very well balanced, great flavour
Palate - Medium body, very smooth quite sweet palate. Finish as main flavour with a very smooth dark malts finish with some milk sugars
Overall - Should have rated this ages ago. The cask is much better than the bottle. At it’s abv it’s probably the best Scottish stout I’ve tasted - must be one of the best in the UK. It’s Cairngorm’s top beer.

18th September 2012: Birmingham (England); mini-pub-crawl. 2nd pint of the evening was in the Wetherspoons pub called ‘The Brier Rose’. I enjoyed this immensely and found it to be far superior to its bottled version. Same lovely dark ruby red body: this time the head stayed, a thick layer of tanned foam sat throughout the tasting. Chocolate and coffee esters in the nose; carried on into the taste and then liquorice arrives to add extra flavours and balance. Malty molasses gave it some sweetness, which helped my enjoyment of the pint as I prefer the slightly sweeter brews to the hop bitterness some offer. Richer and creamier than the bottle; this was a great beer and set me up for the rest of the evenings drinking.

Cask at GBBF, 7/8/12. Looks like crude oil; jet black. Light head; large bubbles. Sweet roasty, light smoke aroma. Taste - Fairly sweet, but also roasty & quite a smoky malt. Faint bitter finish, with lingering roast & smoke. Quite nice, bit savoury. Medium, sugary body.

The head is medium, the body black. It smells soft and sweet chocolate, nice! The taste is roasty, a bit bitter-malty, a bit chocolate. Nice! 11/11/12/12/-/12

Black body, offwhite head. Aroma has sugary coffee, cookies, greasy waffles?, some choco. Flavour is dark chocolateish with flat metally malt. Quite flat overall. Excellent on the nose, but disappointment in mouth

Cask at Cloisters. Black, medium tan head with good lacing. Lovely nose - mocha, roast malts, liquorice. Similar flavours, nice chocolate characteristic, more liquorice, lovely creamy mouthfeel and a soft roasty finish. Lovely.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2013 Cask @ Gallows Bird RAF 2012. Pours black with a latte-colored head. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, tones of chocolate and cocoa, dark fruits. Taste is slightly roasted, lots of coffee, mocha, somewhat malty. Dark fruits in the finish, dates and plums. Palate is smooth, not very full. Could do with more backbone.
