A Scottish stout with a wonderful rich dark colour. A smooth full bodied beer with subtle bitterness giving way to late sweetness and underlying roast barley hints.

Cask (Gallows Bird, Espoo, Real Ale Festival 2006) Black, thin head. Classic stout aroma - malt, chocolate, dark fruits. Taste follows suit. Chocolatey and spicey. Superb stout, amazing what they can do at 4.4%

Cask @ Gallows Bird. Pours black with a latte-colored head. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, tones of chocolate and cocoa, dark fruits. Taste is slightly roasted, lots of coffee, mocha, somewhat malty. Dark fruits in the finish, dates and plums. Palate is smooth, not very full. Could do with more backbone.

On tap @ the Haymarket Bar. Pours opaque black with a nice creamy head. The nose has a hint of chocolate and some earthiness. The taste has more of the same. The palate is at least medium bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that is not particularly elegant but suffices. Overall, I’m disappointed as this had been rated highly by others.

Obsidian black with a modest brown head. The nose is nicely sweet, with roasted malts lending plenty of caramel, espresso, and brown sugar notes. The taste is medium sweet, but dry with a slightly bitter finish. The palate is nicely rounded, the texture slightly oily. The carbonation subtle but appreciated. A very nice effort.

First tasted this in The Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in October 2004. Cask, handpump dispense. Matt black in colour with a thick creamy buff head. Strong buttery fudge in the sweet intense aroma. Thick creamy mouthfeel and good lacing.Complex dark malts deliver a rich velvety array of flavours with sweet juicy fruits notes of black plums and port mixed with vanilla fudge and buttery highland toffee. Very slight note of hops in the aftertaste but malt dominates through to the smooth finish with treacle toffee evident. A superb sweet stout and an excellent session ale this. Well recommended and worth seeking out.

Cask at GBBF 2011 (as well as many previous occasions). It pours opaque black, with a thick foamy light tan head. The nose is smoke, bonfire, toasted sesame seed, milk chocolate and toffee. The taste is caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, smoke, peat, lactose and dark fruit. Medium body and low carbonation. Good balance. Smooth, drinkable and very flavoursome. A great beer.
