Cask conditioned handpump Wig & Pen Northampton 09/01/14. A dark brown coloured beer with a white head. This is odd. Boozy with whiskey notes. Vanilla. Sweet caramel. Biscuit. Vinegar. Apple and honey. So much going on and so much of it weird. Now 5.6%.

Cask @ JDW Elgin 171212 5.6% ABV
Copper brown, clear, frothy white head, good lacing
Aroma of toffee, caramel malts, touch of cereal
Taste of caramel malts, rich toffee malts, some cereal, soft bitter hops in the background, quite easy going for the abv
Palate - medium body, smooth. Finish as main flavour, dryish and bitter, lingering digestive biscuit dunked in caramel, slightly metallic note maybe from the spices
Overall - Certainly one of the better Xmas ales around

Cask at Prince of Wales, Aberdeen. It pours dark brown, with a thin off-white head. The nose is soap, leather, candied fruit and caramel. The taste is wood, leather, caramel, candied fruit, spice, dust and alcohol warmth, with a dry finish. Medium body, soft carbonation and slightly syrupy mouth-feel. Ok.

On cask at Cloisters. Pours an amber colour with a thick white head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel and toffee. Similar flavours. Alcohol is quite well masked overall.

First tasted this in The Esquires House, Glasgow in November 2003. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear ruby red in colour with a thick creamy white head. Strong aroma of fruity malt with hints of glycerine. Creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malts give rich booming flavours of fiery sweet maltloaf with redcurrants and winegums. Difficult to detect any hop resins in the short aftertaste but hard water salts evident. Finish is warming and fruity sweet. Reminded me of RCH Firebox? A good example of a Scottish strong ale and worth seeking out.

CAsk at Edinburgh airport, landside. Deep ruby/amber, creamy head. Dark fruit, grain, spices, rather herbal or medical. A little yeast, spicy aftertaste.
