500ml bottle pours a deep amber color with a 2 finger off-white head that settles slowly to a thin lattice of lace on the glass. Aroma is light fruits with caramel and toasted grains and a pleasant floral hop presence. Taste is quite malty sweet with some toasted notes and a mild hoppy bitter finish. Body is quite substantial considering the low ABV and carbonation is good. An enjoyable bitter ale and recommended for those who enjoy English bitters.

500ml Bottle taken on a sunny but cold winters afternoon (Sat 18th Feb 2012): poured into my ’Abbot Ale’ glass tankard. Lovely looking beer: dull deep brown until held up to the sunlight, it then shows its true colours. A beautiful red body, clear and bright, on top sits a cream coloured foam covering that feels like velvet on the lips. I over cooled the beer, so no smells could be found at first but slowly the aroma of roasted malts began to appear. The flavours in the mouth also took some time to come out because of the coldness: again it was the malts that stood out initially with some hop bitterness towards the end of every sip adding a bite to the taste. Looks like it is a monster beer, but it doesn’t have enough body depth or alcohol content to live up to its first impression. Well carbonated and pleasant enough but could have been so much better with just a little tweeking.

500 ml bottle @ John Bull pub in Aalborg. Beautiful, clear, deep ruby body with a thin off-white head. Mild aroma of sweet malt and dry fruit like raisins. Flavor is strong, sweet malt and dry fruit and nuts. Not much bitter. Quite nice, but lacking something, feels more heavy and sweet than refreshing at the end of the bottle. Some alcohol in aftertaste.

Bottle. Dark amber, small to average and fully diminishing head. Moderate, malty and sweetish aroma, some caramel , faint toffee and roasted malt. Body is medium, malty and sweetish flavor, caramel and toffee, some roasted malt. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, caramel and some roasted malt. Caramel sweetish bitter – OK but nothing special.

Bottled 500ml (BZ, BB 04/2011)
Deep ruby color, steady creamy beige head, some lace. Toffeish-nutty nose. Light body. Sweetish, toasted nutty, toffeish-caramelly flavor. Light lingering bitterness in the finish with nutty notes. Listed here as a bitter, but is perhaps more like light premium bitter or even mild.

Blairgus (1189) - California, USA - APR 6, 2011
6 April 2011, bottle from brewery. definitely a dark mahogany colour, clear w steady bubbles and a foamy head. nose is slightly watery coffee malt. can’t say i find much hop presence here. med/full body, slightly creamy and moderately fizzy. I’d say this is a pretty decent british ale. decent coffee malt profile w a slight hop bitter finish. robust, if not singular. nothing spectacular but a very nice pint and nothing to complain about.

500ml bottle from Dobbies garden centre, Ashford. Beautiful clear chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Some leafy hop, some soft toffee/fudge aroma, some milk choc and light coffee. Bready malts in the mouth with some more fudge flavour on the swallow and finish. Hops are fairly muted. the malts are fairly decent and it’s a pretty decent drinkable, malty bitter.

Bottle: Deep amber coloured and a bit unclear, small off-white foamy layer; moderate toasty and fruity nose, hops not very present; dryish bitter-sweet flavour, light bodied; lingering bitter-roasty finish, sweet malt well hidden. Well crafted, but not too exciting Ale....
