First tasted this way back at the Paisley Beer Festival in March 1994. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear garnet red in colour with a thin white head. Slight hint of caramel in the short aroma. Thin but milky mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts give a sweet maltloaf flavour with syrupy raisins, black grapes and buttery toffee. Slight hop prickle evident in the short aftertaste. Finish is robust and malty with sweet vinous fruit and oak cask coming through. A decent session bitter.

Cask @ Wetherspoons, Inverness.
Appearance - Dark brown, clear, thin white head, reasonable lacing.
Aroma - Dark malts, molasses.
Taste - Very malty - dark caramel malts, sweet dark malts, some roasted malt, fruity berries, slight bitter hops (not much hops), hint of cocoa.
Palate - Finish is quite dry with some roast malt and lingering light bitterness.
Overall - A pleasent beer that emphasises the malts.

Cask conditioned gravity dispense Northants Beer Festival 2011. A chestnut coloured beer with a whitish bubbly head. Fruity berry malts with toffee notes in the nose. Malty and bready in the mouth. Certainly on the sweet side but gets away with it.

@ Kay’s Bar. The aroma is mostly buttery with a little bit of toast. Bright, brown with a thick head. Toasty palate, light bitterness and some diacetyl as well. This brewery has a lot of this sort of problem from what I can tell.

Cask @ Kay’s Bar. Great dark brown with luminescent copper hue. Served with sparkler. Overwhelming butter in the aroma, but it’s just within the realm of acceptability. Some sweet malt character too. Soft palate. Butter dominates, unfortunately! But the malt character is nice. It is all dark bread and raisins. Butter be gone! Otherwise the beer is nice.
