12 oz can - Good froth, nice lace. Definite hop presence but there was a lemon iced tea vibe that was distracting

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma: Bread, spice, citrus
Appearance: Dark amber with robust foamy white head
Taste: A bready, slightly sweet forepalate that leads to bitterness
Palate: Medium mouthfeel, with a lot of maltyness. Slightly bitter finish.
Overall: Fairly malty, bordering on a belgian style ipa.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Can from guest at BBQ (thank you!). Hazy dark amber with 2-inch butterscotch cream head. It sticks around. Aroma is strong lemongrass and light caramel, sweet oranges. Marshmallow and pine. body is medium and sticky/resinous, almost tacky. lingering carbonation burn. Flavor is huge resin and sap. Very bitter. Tree. A bit astringent. Hint of metal. Initially, some dark caramel, but this fades as my palate is desensitized by the hop onslaught. Overall, too much bitterness, not my cup of tea.

Can. An all day, all round balanced and sessionable IPA. Nothing to rave on about but solid in all aspects. Not too shabby

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
I poured a 12oz can into a tulip glass. There was no freshness date. It cost $2.95 ($0.25 per ounce).
Appearance: Mostly clear copper hue, some carbonation visible. Forms a large, ivory, frothy head which retains and laces well.
Smell: Mostly just pine and general earthy aromas; a hint of lemon.
Taste: I like hops as much as the next craft beer enthusiast, but when theyíre not matched with the proper body the results can be a bit disappointing. Caldera IPA is a good example as itís a fairly light IPA at only 6.1% ABV, yet it has the extreme bitterness of an imperial brew at 94 IBUs. The hops are a tad obnoxious and the malt base is way too sweet for this style.
Thereís a lot of bitterness throughout the palette here. Itís dry at first, then becomes a bit more dank and earthy as it progresses. Piney for sure, though noticeably rustic and heavy as opposed to light pine needles. The malt base is remarkably sweet - similar to a lemon lollipop. The hops do impart some citrus flavors, but all they do is echo the maltiness rather than balance it out. It finishes a little dry with a slightly cloying aftertaste of caramelized sugar and sheer hop bitterness. Itís not that this beer is bad per se, but itís just not right for the style and certainly not to my preferences.
Drinkability: While not all that heavy of a beer, Caldera IPA seems like a bigger brew than it is. A lot of that has to do with the intense bitterness and sweet taste. Though only 6.1% ABV, it has the lower drinkability of a heavier brew. Not an ideal hoppy beer for amateurs, though pros should have no trouble getting it down (just prepare for a cloying aftertaste).

July 2010 from a can. Amber to copper color with a white head. Hoppy aromas as soon as you pop the can. This is followed by floral and piney aromas with some caramel. Long dry bitter finish. Fantastic IPA

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
More of an English style IPA than a Northwest. Light citrus and pine aromas, medium body that is malty for an IPA and a nice finish. Dry but not too bitter
Leave your pretensions at the door.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
From can. Near perfect pour--burnt orange with two fingers of off-white head. Nose dominated by malt. Malty upfront, giving way to a nice, clean hop profile and clean finish. The 6.1% is a little soft for an IPA--particularly one at this price point, but a solid beer nonetheless.
