4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours black with brown head that lasts a long time. Chocolate, cocoa, roast, kind of a creaminess like an oatmeal stout. Rich roast chocolate flavor, cherry/almond tones. I can sense how the licorice has influenced the flavor but it doesn’t taste like licorice. Nice bitter aftertaste and an ash note present a pleasant contrast to the sweeter start. Good beer, although i can see the licorice component being polarizing.

8.8% abv, displayed on bottom left-corner of label. 650 mL bottle purchased from Wing’s Market in Fairlee for $6.09 + tax. To long-stemmed tulip glass (Tiffany, thanks!), it pours a thick, rubbery mauve-tinted black; soap-sudsy caramel sienna head 1 fingernail in length. Aromas of red pottery clay, brimstone, puréed black cherries, cherry tomatoes, cotton, lavender, birch bark, black licorice candies, candied ginger, marshmallow root, and soil. Tastes of almond milk, cocoa, black licorice, birch beer, mocha, American Spirits Perique Rich Robust/Black tobacco, and beet sugar. Grill char, honey, yeast, sweet potatoes, buckwheat, and hop bitterness by swallow. Nutty and consumable. However, its alcohol content wasn’t hidden all that well: felt it after just its first sip. Swishable, and delicately creamy. Nice.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A: Quarter finger light mocha fades to translucent of the same. Beer is dark, dark brown. No lacing to speak of.
S: Extra roasty. Coffee, graham, cocoa, malt, licorice. I can say, however, the hops are still quite present. Piney, resiny. Malt dominant, but still hoppy.
T: Roast, cocoa, coffee, lighter hops with earthy feel. Good beer. Not spending much time here, but this is really good.
M: thick and syrupy. Like a good beer should be in this genre.
D: this is a really good beer. I hate to be a slave to price point, but at nearly $13 for a bomber, I want to be wowed. The beer is good, really really good. If under $9/bomber, I would be all about this one.

I’m not a fan of licorice so when I brought it home and noticed "brewed with licorice" on the label I was a bit disappointed that I missed it. Surprise! This stout was pretty good. I wasn’t overwhelmed with licorice at all.
Poured a decent head, lace was average upon drinking. Appearance was like pitch black, liquid gold. Aroma, taste and mouthfeel were all very decent. Not going to be my go-to imperial stout but highly likely to have again. Lesson be learned all...try new things! I would have never given this purchase a serious look if I would have noticed licorice.

After reading JB’s rating I had to pull mine out of the cellar. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma of dark roasted malt and a hint of licorice. Full bodied with average carbonation, and with a slick texture. Flavor of dark roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, and just a very very small hint of licorice.
