COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Caldera’s Rauch Ur Bock is a German-style lager billowing with intense cherry and beachwood smoke flavors. We used two different smoked grains in this lager, one cured with cherrywood and the other cured with beachwood. Warning, this beer has an intense smoked flavor.

Poured out of a bottle into a tulip glass. Lots of bubbles, almost transparent, rust-red color. No head. Smell: Smoky, smoke smoke. Smells like right after I get the BBQ going but before I throw any meat on the grill. I also get a green olive scent at the beginning. Taste: Smoke. Burnt wood. Sweet malt at the end. No bitterness at all. I think the smoke mellows out the intense malt sweetness that usually accompanies a bock. Very crisp, it is a lager after all. A good beer. There are not too many smoked beers made, so for that reason alone I tried it. Well worth it, though it was not my favorite smoked beer.

Bomber. Smells and tastes quite smoky, more pork than cigarettes. The base is sweet caramel, which is right for this sort of thing. Right level of body and carbonation. Doesn’t feel like 7.5% to me.

Bottle. Light amber, average and mostly diminishing head. Moderate, malty and sweetish aroma, light caramel and some smokiness with light bacon. Body is medium, malty and sweetish flavor, light caramel and smokiness with faint alcohol. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, light - some smokiness with faint - light bacon, light alcohol. OK smoked with nice aroma. Flavor/finish lacks smokiness (compared to aroma) - finish has too much alcohol considering the body. Cannot be comprered with those from Bamberg or Schlenkerla.

Tasted on 1/31/12 from a capped 22oz bomber bottle. Pours clear dark amber with an average beige head that slowly recedes to a thin collar of lace. The nose is smokey with toasted cocoa nibs and a touch of caramel. The flavor is even smokier with nutty toasted cocoa nibs and some nice caramel and coffee malt. The body is full with average carbonation and a long smokey finish.

Pours a cloudy medium amber. Normal head volume, above average retention and lacing. Excellent nose of wood smoke with distinct cherry like sweet notes. It lacks the meatiness of the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbiers and is lower in intensity. Light medium body with a somewhat oily texture. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is outstanding and follows the nose in regard to Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbiers (no meat, less complex and less intense). It begins with a burst of smoke over a sweet cherry note. The middle is a subtle bitterness with an ashy quality over caramel sweetness. The finish is a slow fade of smoky sweetness with a slight alcohol note. A very good offering, especially for style introduction purposes, but not in the same league as Aecht Schlenkerla.

Glassy brick red color. Decent head, slight but attractive lace. Aroma is beef jerky. Pure and simple. Teryaki flavor? I can smell literally nothing else. The flavor is more beef jerky and smoked meats. There is a sugary sweetness on the back end Feels slick and oily. Listen, you aren’t going to have more than a thimbleful of this stuff at a time, admit it. It’s very good, but it’s a niche beer.

Bottled. 10cl sample. Thanks Menno for the share. The aroma has smoked meat, toffee, slight grass. Clear, amber coloured beer with an off-white, medium head. The taste is light bitter, sweet, has toffee, some caramel and smoke mainly. Body is a little watery. Easy drinking smoked beer.

Bottle shared by Menno, thanks! Quite some clean wood in the aroma, smokey, but quite different than the Bamberg smoked beers. Really well balanced and clean.

Bottle. Geologyguy nails it in his review, "Smoked smell that is great! A good smoked beer, not quite as good as my favorite one...needs to be heavier and less watery, touch too much hops too".
