Caldera’s Rauch Ur Bock is a German-style lager billowing with intense cherry and beachwood smoke flavors. We used two different smoked grains in this lager, one cured with cherrywood and the other cured with beachwood. Warning, this beer has an intense smoked flavor.

Poured out of a bottle into a tulip glass. Lots of bubbles, almost transparent, rust-red color. No head. Smell: Smoky, smoke smoke. Smells like right after I get the BBQ going but before I throw any meat on the grill. I also get a green olive scent at the beginning. Taste: Smoke. Burnt wood. Sweet malt at the end. No bitterness at all. I think the smoke mellows out the intense malt sweetness that usually accompanies a bock. Very crisp, it is a lager after all. A good beer. There are not too many smoked beers made, so for that reason alone I tried it. Well worth it, though it was not my favorite smoked beer.

Poured into a snifter out of a 22oz bomber. Pours clear deep ruby with a one finger white head. Good head retention with above-average lacing. Aroma lets you know right off the bat that this one is quite smoky. Great bonfire/bacon aroma with a little bit of grass and fruit in the background from the hops. Heavy on the smoke, though, which I love. The flavor is also very smoky but has some more complexities compared to the aroma. More campfire and ash but with some fruitiness from the yeast and perhaps the hops. There is some biscuity malt and caramel along with some molasses. Bitterness is on the light side but the sweetness remains restrained. Overall, an excellent rauch and one of the better non-German examples I have had. Very drinkable.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Copper bronze pour leading up to an of-white head. Busy carbonation. That aroma is 10 out of 10 for me! I love my smoked beers to smell like I’m standing next to a roaring bonfire and that is what I get from this. I barely care about the grainy malt character because I’m just about coughing with smoker’s cough thanks to this sensational aroma! Medium body. The smokiness is a little muted in the taste but there is this fascinating cherry-like character, maybe from the cherry wood they used, that erupts on my palate. This is absolutely wonderful. Wish I picked up more than one!

Pours deep gold into a stem glass. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes leaving spot lacing to coat surface. Sweet smoke and maple aromas. Soft with sweet caramel and smoke upfront turning to dried bacon in the lasting mildly bitter finish.

Bottle. Clear copper color with a small white head. Intense big smoky aroma of smoked birch, charcoal, burnt bone, salt, leather and sweetness from dark sugar and hints of maltiness. Taste is dry with dark fruits maltiness, smoked wet wood & leather. Taste is a bit disappointing compared to the fantastic aroma. It has a good smoke flavor, but you expect even more after smelling it.

Clear reddish brown, small head. Big smokey aroma, leather and dark sugar. Taste is slightly smokey but dominated by dark fruits and quite dry. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. The smoke clears when you drink it and your left with a competent bock but not much more, so bit of a let down but still pretty tasty.

22 oz. bottle. It pours a very deep copper/mahogany color with a tan head. The aroma is super smoky with lots of wood smoke and beef jerky. Very much like Schlenkerla. The flavor is again, super smoky with with a nice underlying malt and brown sugar sweetness that lends a nice complement. Flavors of smoked wood and beef jerky dominate. The body is medium and the carbonation is prickly. My only complaint is that the mouthfeel isn’t quite as smooth as Schlenkerla, but otherwise this is just as good.

Bottle from Decicco Ardsley. Clear amber with lasting head and lace. Strong smokey cherrywood sweet grassy grainy aroma. Very grassy grainy medium caramel smoky sweetness with sweet earthy smokey soody ash mildly bitter finish that is dried by efferevescent carbo. Slightly gassy. Very smoky. Very good, but lacks the refined palate and mouthfeel of the true greats (Shlenkerla).
