This is an interesting beer. I’m not a fan of chocolate in beer but as chocolate beer goes, this is done pretty well. The chocolate is fairly intense and borders on too sweet but is balanced by bitterness which is also intense. Both interact with pronounced flavors from barrel aging for a lively experience which is appealing even if it lacks integration.

750 from the Tin Bucket. Pours a pure black color with a medium beige head. A light oak and vanilla nose. The flavor is super sweet vanilla, bourbon, some bitter chocolates, coffee more oak. Quite nice. A slick palate.

Bottle from Wegmans Leesburg - pours pitch with a dark chocolate head. It’s bitter dark chocolate with some oatmeal notes. A little too bitter for me, but it’s solid.

I bought this a while back, and then just couldn’t get interested for some reason. I think the white wax annoyed me, I don’t know. In any case, I finally was in the mood for something fairly big and chocolatey, and popped it. Wow! Pours a very very dark clear brown. Initial fizzy head surprisingly fades into a lush creamy head. Aroma is of a high quality bittersweet chocolate bar. Amazing. Hint of vanilla too. Just a touch of alcohol. A sniffer for sure. Flavor is more of a rich mix of milk and bittersweet chocolate, with a vanilla and faintly boozy finish. Just a mite thin on the palate, probably because it tries to play porter rather than stout. But still a pleasant surprise, enjoyed this one. Still smelling on it an hour later.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a dark black brown with a tan head leaving moderate lacing. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate amd the barrell aging. Chocolate flavor is strong and immediate, more of a semi sweet chocolate than bitter dark, some slight coffee notes and a touch of licorice. Absolutely delicious and worth trying if you appreciate porters.

Bottled at SBWF. Near black, small beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate. Sweet with full body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Toffeeish chocolate, not much else. Fairly low bitterness. A candyish superficial beer, Southern Tier style.
