3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JAN 2, 2014 Bottle: thanks, Tim! Mostly black pour with a very deep ruby red color at the edges; topped with a khaki colored head, foamy with decent retention. Aroma has notes of largely sweet chocolate, cocoa powder, light coffee beans, & very mild dark raisins. The oak aspect of the beer is quite light. The sweet chocolate aromas grow with time. Taste is straight up baker’s chocolate; a true chocolate lover’s beer. Quite sweet, with low roast but still manageable. Light creamy coffee notes with some very faint oak in the back-end. Competes with Sam Smith’s Organic Chocolate as the beer that’s closest to chocolate milk. This wins, though, as the body is bigger & there’s a touch of oak & coffee depth to it still. Nice & sweet but far from cloying.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from a trade. Poured into a snifter. Pours black with a half finger of dark brown head. Aroma of sweet chocolate, bourbon, vanilla and oak. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter. Dark chocolate and chocolate pudding. Bourbon, vanilla and oak. Medium bodied with a creamy but surprisingly thin texture. Lively carbonation and a very long finish. Overall, very good. I would classify this as a winner.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Alexandria, VA.
I found a beer from my wants list on a shelf. Happy day. The beer is dark brown, approaching black with a dense, beige head. The aroma brings a grandiose oak presence. Wow. Oak and chocolate, baby! No surprise, the beer is rich and elegant with wood presence throughout. Subtle notes of vanilla. Dark, rich chocolates. Low to moderate carbonation. A bit on the sweet side, but certainly well done. Great beer, though I think the $19 price tag is too steep.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark brown pour with an off-white head. The aroma is amazing. I get a hint of bourbon when I first smelled the beer (I was the first person to pour from the bottle) but that disappears really quickly. It is replaced by some huge chocolate notes as well as some roasted malt and oak. The flavor is also great. I get a ton of chocolate with some roasted malt, maple, vanilla and light oak also present. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Love this beer. Would love to try it again.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Amber brown liquid with hints of bread, cereal, and coffee with a slightly bittersweet herbal finish. There is a bite of alcohol on the swallow- I taste a bit of barrel aged smooth bourbon. There is something else dancing around that dissipates as soon as it affects your tongue sorta tangy esters of raisin with a woody non-smokey finish. Nicely done porter.

Poured from the bottle. Colour is very dark. Aroma is so intensely chocolatey. Flavour is also chocolatey, some nice bitterness from the hops. A very good beer to comemmorate a friend.

Thanks to GatorGuy92 for the share. Cheers, Matt! Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Nose is some light roast, big chocolate, cocoa, and cacao with bourbon, oak, vanilla, wood, and some mild coffee. Flavor is similar- chocolate, some light roast, bourbon, oak, vanilla, caramel, and light cookie and coffee. Medium in body and lingering chocolate-y character on the finish.

This is an interesting beer. I’m not a fan of chocolate in beer but as chocolate beer goes, this is done pretty well. The chocolate is fairly intense and borders on too sweet but is balanced by bitterness which is also intense. Both interact with pronounced flavors from barrel aging for a lively experience which is appealing even if it lacks integration.
