On cask at Bennets. Pours a golden brown colour with a thick white head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel and barley. Alcohol is fairly present with an upfront yeast character. Caramel, yeast and chocolate flavours also. A little thin with moderate carbonation and CO2 prickle. A lingering chocolate milk flavour.

First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in April 1986. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear amber in colour with a thick creamy head. Typical caley aroma of chewy toffee biscuit notes. Pale malt gives a creamy buttery shortbread biscuit base with chewy toffee, butterscotch flavours. No hint of fruit in this. Slight dusty hop notes in the brief aftertaste but sweet malt dominates. Finish is sweet and biscuity with toffee notes at the end. A great Scottish session ale and well recommended.

En ganska vanlig referens när det gäller öl är smörkola. Vill man veta hur denna smak är skall man köpa denna öl. Även en viss maltighet.

Draught at Cairnbann Hotel. Pours a toffee brown with a good head. The nose has caramel and malt. The taste is of toffee and malt. The palate is medium in structure, there’s a big creamy texture and it is reasonably clean on the end. Overall, this is better than in the bottle, for definite.

Can find it everywhere in Edinburgh - harder in Glasgow - but for a common ale it’s nae bad.

Bitter without real bitterness. Malty, a bit sweet aroma, almost no carbonisation at all.

Multiple samplings reveal a beer that is always - always - full of butter. Caley 80 is a modest bitter, already malty in character. Caledonian can’t keep the butter out of their beers, however, and it is very noticeable in this product, which in most instances fails to even live up to the most modest standards of drinkability. A full pint of Caley 80 is invariably a challenge even I cannot best.

cask at The Malt Shovel in Edinburgh - Pours mostly clear amber with a small, white, lingering head. There’s a mild aroma of caramel malt. The flavor is also of caramel malt with fairly minimal hops presence. It’s light to medium bodied and while okay, they haven’t exactly put the "bitter" in this bitter.
