500ml can pours a darkish brown somewhat clear not opaque, foamy head and lively carbonation. Aroma of caramel, hint of toffee, some fruit notes. A little bitter, with some sour clean finish. Altogether ok, after drinking the 500ml I donít feel much, maybe the low alcohol.

Dark pour with a brown head. Aroma is sweet and roasted. Body is mild, chocolate, sweet. A roasted malt finish.

Nice head but after that could have been a mass produced 80 shilling on keg. Nothing stood out but then Iím not really a fan of the malt heavy style.

Bottled as Edinburgh Castle, deep brown with a big off-white head, faintly sweet malt and metal nose, gassy, sweet and lightly earthy hop-bitter on the palate, a distant metallic twang and a touch of toffee.

Cask. Under the name Edinburgh Castle. Aroma of roasted malts and stone fruits. Chestnut brown with white foam head. Tastes earthy, malty and rich with a pleasantly refreshing aeration and cereal finish. Iím glad to get some more Caledonian beers down in Nottingham since only a few places keep Deuchars IPA and the bitter and stout are equally session worthy.

Nice red brown colour. Aroma and flavour are malty with light nutty and caramel notes. Good session bitter.

Cask at The City Hotel, Durham, £3/pint. Good-looking red-amber beer with a smooth, off-white head. The nose has sweet cereal, buttered popcorn and a hint of tropical fruit. The palate is smooth but the taste is a little too bitter with loads of grassy hop flavours. Reasonable bitter.

500ml bottle on 25th Sep 2015 during a random tasting evening with myself. Clean amber body, off-white head that didnít start deep and soon turned into a wisp and collar. Malty brew and semi-sweet in nature. Not got an 80 Shilling depth of flavour or body texture compared to what I remember when living up in Morayshire in the 1980ís but enjoyable all the same.

July 2008: Dark brown 500ml bottle, caught just before it went out of date (in three weeks). Poured into my new La Chouffe glass two and a half times. Deep, clear mahogany colour with a good foaming slightly off-white head. Looked good to me. A real chocolate aroma to it and some toasted caramel with a coffee hint too. Rich roasted malt flavour, the chocolate, caramel and coffee in the aroma are not so prominent, but they are present in the taste. This isnít a creamy thick beer, but nor is it a wishy washy thin one. It is just about right. Impressed, this is good and an ideal winter drinking beer, even at the low 4.1%, it punches well above its alcohol weight.
