Blandly malty, no hops to speak of - rather a generic bitter. Itís a shame because itís good on draught.

A solid British IPA. Slips down happily each time. Often on offer at my local OneStop, so all good. 7/10

14.4.2014. Looks like basic lager, nose is quite light with some bitterness and cereal. Flavour has similar malty feeling with mild fruity bitter finish.

Bottle from Asda. Haven't drank this beer for ages. Deuchars and it's pal 80% used to be the Scottish pub antidote to the dreadful Tartan Specials and their ilk that dominated the market back then. When they were good, they were very good. Sometimes, though, a pint would disappoint. I had the same feeling with this bottle.
So lacking in character you have to force it over your tongue to extract any flavour. It is there, but sadly diluted.

500ml bottle at home. Pours clear amber, no head. Big bubbles, too fizzy. Light malt aromas, butterscotch. Taste is watery and buttery. Used to like this beer, 5+ years ago. Itís changed or I have. Probably both.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bitter? Ratebeer, hang your heads. This is a classic IPA in the tradional sense. Scotlandís IPA royalty. A Scottish/British IPA not an American one, which are amazing in their own right but a different category. This one is golden, smooth, subtle and not in your face like modern interpretations but drink and love. The bitterness overrides the malts and sweetness (classic IPA, not bitter). Another great simple beer with nostalgic character and history. Here reserved for you to drink the classic style of IPA. Like Belhaven 80, a true Scottish classic. Like a little black dress, fish and chips, VW Golf and The Rolling Stones, dependable good beer. Keep it up Caledonian, its a classic. Why is it so different on cask though? Great beer too but very different.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle, on Skye. Pours clear and light amber with a foamy white head. Aroma is grassy, hay, light malt, floral, some pleasant character from aroma hops. Flavour is light malt, lightly fruity, a little sweetness but a slightly buttery texture. Not bad, enjoyable enough.
