Tried bottled version. A reasonably good beer with a lot of character.

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2006 Sept, 2002This is the most famous product of the revived Edinburgh brewery which was founded by George Lorimer and Robert Clark in 1869 and ran as an an independent until it was bought by the Northern England brewers Vaux in 1919. It was saved from closure by a management buy-out in 1987. It is the only British brewery left which still uses direct-fired open coppers, which give Caledonian beers their distinctive brown sugar taste. The extra hops in this IPA make a good balance to the sweet malt, reducing the brown sugar taste to make this the most acceptable of Caledonian’s offerings. Crisp, clean, light and with a gentle perfume. This is fairly dry and quite thirst-quenching. [3.2]
Feb, 2006 Despite all the praise it has received I haven’t really enjoyed this beer over the past few years. I remembered I had enjoyed the bottled version, so I’ve been meaning to give the bottle version another go to see what I think of it these days. This is not my thing. The malt is thin yet has that ugly diacetyl edge. And the hops have a sheep’s urine fragrance that is frankly off-putting. I’m still not sure what the fuss is about. [2.5]

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2005 15th Aug 2002 - Bottled. Low carbonation, pours to a small head, which quickly dissipates. Pale in colour with a rather hoppy aroma. Pleasant and refreshing. Eager to try this from the cask as it was just announced Champion Beer of Britain this year.

Very flat, not much head. Looks like flat Skol. Quite sweet smelling. Its easy on the palate, and easily drinkable. Ideal for a session. It’s as easy as Richard Grettons Mum.

Not as aggressively hopped as a USIPA but fair amount of citrus and grapefruit in the finish. Doesn’t bite, goes down fairly smoothly. A Scottish/Cask brewed alternative. Top class in its own right as Scotland doesn’t need a crisp bitter biting thirst quenching USIPA.

Fruity nose with hits of peach or mango. Hoppy citrus flavor. Smooth out of the cask. Nice light beer.

You expect IPAs to be bland ’session’ beers. This fits the bill very well.
