COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Special - May 2006.
This magic potion is in the tradition of milds and 60/-. Tempting chocolately colour, complex mixture of liquorice and mocha aromas. Luscious deep malty flavour.

A brown coloured brew, with a light malty chocolate flavour. A nice simple pint.

Tasted this in The Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in June 2006. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin off white head. Malty aroma with berry fruits evident. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex gives rich moist maltloaf base with juicy redcurrant and rasberry fruit flavours in the mouth and drier chocolate and caramel notes. Short aftertaste with little sign of hop resins present. Finish is sweet and malty with a hint of dry liquorice. An interesting mild and reminds me of a dark version of Caledonian 125.

Cask (handpump), Knights Templar (JDW), Chancery Lane, London. A dark ruby coloured brew with a beige head. Roasty aroma, but there’s some unwelcome diacetyl in there. Lost of roast malt in the flavour with a touch of creamy chocolate. Fairly sweet. A decent enough mild, but there’s not really anything particularly magic, or potion-like, about it.

Cask at the Market Porter, Southwark. Dark, almost black but with ruby hints. The beer lacks body and is rather boring, with a fairly bland taste with quite a lot of fruit. No character.

Cask at The Wellington, Birmingham. Dark and creamy with a good head. Chocolate and caramel aromas but lacking in flavour. Not bad but pretty average.

<!-- i -->Cask Conditioned, at The Surry Docks (JDW), London.<!-- /I --><!-- br --> Deep rustic brown colour, patchy, sudsy head. Lovely, lifting hoppy aroma. Looks all the world like a light mild, drinks a beautiful hoppy flavour though. I finely made beer and my first rate at this pub.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashord. Deep russet colour with thin beige head. Good toffee malt, soft in mouth, some coffee. Quite a lot of flavour for a light alcohol beer. Wettish in mouth as you’d expect, with toffee dominated hop dry finish. OK

Aroma is a bit sweet, lightly burnt and maybe grassy hops. Taste is simila though a bit thin and not much of a finish.

Cask conditioned @ Humble Plumb, Soton. Deep amber colour - not dark enough for me to initially recognise it as a mild. Malty toasty flavours. Thin watery body lacking any hop presence. Lacks the delicious malty fruits of good milds and comes off as a dark bitter without enough hops.
