3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 berkshirejohn (3014) - Bracknell, Berkshire, ENGLAND - FEB 16, 2012
330ml bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring as Calvors Premium Lager at an ABV of 5.0%. Pale straw with a ring of white head and light carbonation; the aroma is of Saaz hops, leafy and slightly spicy; crisp and dry with a fruity apple flavour; and a clean finish. Like the 3.8 this is so much better than the average macro lager.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2012 330ml bottle, best before 240512, drunk at 2011 Festive tasting on 30 December 2011. It’s good to see British brewers making "proper" lager but often they seem to fall between two stools - better than the usual macro fizz but not reaching the level of the genuine (good) European stuff. I thought his one suffered a little from that. Clear gold with a diminishing head but decent carbonation. Not too fizzy. Mellow mouthfeel, maybe a bit soft. Light biscuity malts on the nose and palate. I’m not sure what style of lager they are going for but I tend to prefer the dry, North German style with plenty of hop bite. This was a bit soft and sweet for my taste. OK but didn’t really excite.

At Chriso New Year 2011/12 tasting. Clear pale gold lasting white head. Toast. Some bland malt. Rubbish
2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 suprchunk (1059) - Heinsberg, GERMANY - DEC 6, 2011
Fizzy yellow pour. Small white head that is quick to leave the party, but leaves some lacing behind as evidence it was there. A slight corn aroma with some malt hidden away. Not much else. Sweet roasted corn with a distinct dryness. Much like a typical macro lager with a tiny bit more body and flavor. Not that the flavors are actually good, though. I’ll pass next time.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 Leighton (4095) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 14, 2011
Bottle at home in London. Pours crystal clear pale gold, effervescent, with a moderate, pure white foam head. Some grainy malt in the nose, hints of sugar, light cereal. Not getting that pilsener zip I would hope for. Sweet flavor, plenty of cereal, very faint bitterness. Light bodied with high carbonation. There’s a touch more hop bite in the finish, but it’s pretty weak. A bit more sugar, cereal, hints of straw - which is good! - and just a nip of citrus zest. Not an excellent pilsener, but a good beer to drink for refreshment.
2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 EdKing (937) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 24, 2011
Bottle in The Wentworth Hotel, Aldebrough. Colour is clear pale yellow with white foamy head. Nose is lemon citrous grainy, grassy, sweetcorn. Taste is distinctive flavoured with strong grain and grass notes and something a little sour in there too. Interesting but not balanced enough on palate.
1.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 1/20 beerforall (1) - USA - DEC 21, 2009 does not count
A bit over fizzy, very yellow in colour. Massive nose of tinned sweencorn which was a bit off putting.
Palate was dull, just dry. No real flavour.
I respect the idea of a Suffolk lager from Suffolk ingredients but it really needs to be better than this.

Bottled An old gold headless beer. The aroma is slightly sweet and buttery. The taste has some grassy hop. Its’ fairly crisp and clean but lacks depth and is unrewarding
