3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Maker: Camba Bavaria Brauerei, Truchtlaching, Germany ***
Beer: Camba Black Lager (bottled, 330ml) ***
Style: Schwarzbier ***
ALC.VOL.: 5.4% ***
Colour: Pitch black, very small beige head. ***
Nose: Roasted malt, whiff of vanilla, nuts. ***
Texture: Medium body, a bit watery. Moderate carbonation. ***
Taste: Roasted coffee malt, dark cocoa, muted floral note at the start. Bitter and fairly dry. Floral notes are a bit more prominent towards the middle, and a touch of vanilla softens the bitterness, but coffee notes prevail. Nutty and cocoa flavours in the finish, with a hint of sweet vanilla in the rather short aftertaste. ***
Impressions: Characterful Schwarzbier, distinguished from the English stout/porter/dark mild styles because of its hoppy character - though the latter is rather modest here. Very good, very drinkable. Straightforward, clean.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Caramel, chocolate and cocoa form the unexpectedly deep malty flavour of this beer. Dryish, in part due to the roasted notes, but at the same time rounded off by a soft mouthfeel. Excellent.
