Im Zuge der Gegenreformation rief der bayer. Kurfürst Maximilian I. Paulanermönche in sein Land.

Unfiltriertes dunkles Starkbier

Bottle, 8.5% at BBF12. Mild fruity aroma. Hazy brown colour. No head. The flavour is sweet and nicely alcoholic. OK finish, slightly rough.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2012 from bottle. pours a clear, brown reddish colour with a minimal, fawn head. quite fruity aroma, lots of grape and cherry notes to it with only hints of the typical caramel and roasted malt characters of the usual suspects of the doppelbock style. it almost smells like a red wine laced with some sweet malt. regarding taste and palate: medium body and fizzy carbonation. really sweet and fruity for a doppelbock yet not very complex. the mastrobator lacks the typical doppelbock characteristics - the caramel, chocolate and nut flavours are kind of missing! instead one gets lots of cherry and other dark fruit flavours. the aftertaste is slightly bitter. Not a bad beer though, but not quite what you would expect from a representative of this style...

Bottle looks really good. Beer in the glass brownish, small head. Malty-strong aroma. Starts strong, dry-malty, quite alcoholic. Unbalanced notes of caramel and liquorice. Finish still unbalanced. Not too drinkable. Dont like that beer very much.

Swing-top bottle marked 12.09.2012. Nose is somewhat slight, with dark malt and light fruit. Dark ruby brown edging up on light brown, head is tan. Taste much the same as the nose, semi-dry with a thin, vanishing malt presence; very low bitterness (more alcohol showing, in fact) with some earth and dark toffee, but the overall impression is quite mild. Flattish, lifeless medium body. Truth be told, I’m a little disappointed.

0.5 l fliptop bottle from „Sörspecialista”, Bp. Reddish dark brown colour with a medium sized yellowish head, which leaves a thin film behind. Sweet-toasty nose. Syrupy and light sticky textured brew escorted by a sweet-tart tasted aroma with molasses, caramel underpainted by alcohol, grassy hops and toasted malt. The finish is medium to long, sweetbitter and warming with alcohol, toast and citrusses, which leaves a sweetish aftertaste behind. Good.
