COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Summer Barleywine
Named for the 15th Century firearm which was successor to the Blunderbuss, this barrel-aged barleywine aspires to change the way you think of strong beer. Intended for sipping on these sultry summer evenings on our patio (or inside, with the AC), it is at once light and drinkable yet boasts significant body, and is almost syrupy smooth in texture without being cloying. Arquebus presents beautiful, complex notes of concentrated peach and apricot fruit, wildflower honey, toast and coconut oakiness, and a soft, tannin-hinted, white wine-like finish. Aged in French oak chardonnay barrels acquired from the Silverado winery in Napa, the residual flavors contributed by the wood offer a mellowness of character not provided by stainless steel fermentation. This honey-hued, ambrosial beer, beheld in a simple stemmed glass, pours with just a mild effervescence which accentuates its myriad nuances of flavors and aromas. Several more barrels of this elixir await release in the coming years. So for now, enjoy!

On tap at the 2007 GABF: Pours a hazy but mostly transparent golden with a thin ring of white bubbles. Aroma of sweet pale malt and a touch of citrus and light fruits. Body starts fairly full and caramely sweet with some slightly earthy tartness and a drier, more bitter and warming finish. Needs a little more balance and refinement.

On tap @ 5th Annual Boulder Strong Ale Fest poured a cloudy amber with a minimal white head. Aromas of fruitiness, carmel and a hint of wood. Palate was light bodied and tart. Flavors of sour citrus, cherryand a hint of wood with a dry tart finish.

On tap at FoBAB 5. Poured hazy medium amber with just a light ring of off-white head. The aroma was really odd.. carrying an assortment of sweeter grapes and honey throughout, and some other fruits down at deeper levels.. bit of overt alcohol.. this was intriguing, but I just couldn’t wrap my head around what they were trying to do. The flavor had sweet chardonnay grapes and honey that jumped out at me.. warmer finish and definitely complex, but again I just didn’t get it. Medium-bodied with little (if any) carbonation, which I know was intentional.. grainy and sweeter on the palate. I’d like to give this another shot.

On draft at the brew pub. Orange/yellow color with little to no head. Nice barleywine. A little sweet and hot.

Draught at the brewpub. This was listed as 14%. Orange-copper color with no head or bubbles. Sweet, oxidized huge honey and caramel aroma with port and grape notes like a sweet Sauternes. Big alcohol. Syrupy and sour flavor with big grapes and honey, burning alcohol and oak. Doesn’t really do it for me.
