COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Farmhouse ale with pumpkins. The latest installment in the Cambridge Brewing Company’s series of pumpkin offerings, Bière de Gourde is based on the amber-colored beers typical of the rural French/Belgian border known as bière de garde. Brewed with pilsner malt plus wheat and rye, 150 pounds of organic Farm School sugar pumpkins went into the mash as well, embracing the “brew with what you’ve got” tradition of farmhouse breweries. We also added very subtle amounts of whole clove, star anise, allspice, mace, and cinnamon. The beer was then fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and cold-conditioned for several weeks. Its slightly hazy amber-gold mien has highlights of orange from our favorite squash, and boasts a high but fine carbonation. It is crisp on the palate with clean malt, underlying earthy spices, and a hint of tartness in the finish.

(Draught) Pours a deep burnt orange body with a small off-white head. Aroma of nutmeg, pumpkin spice, gourde, cinnamon, clove, and star anise. Flavor of cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, baked gourde, Belgian yeast, caramel, toasted grain, pumpkin, clove, and bread. Nice complex and tasty autumn beer.

A: The beer pours a hazed orange-amber color with a couple fingers of off-white head. S: This is a pumpkin beer, but not what most people think of. Obviously a play on the Biere de Garde style, with pumpkin. Starts off with sweet malt and a mild spice/phenol character from the yeast. Plenty of sweet, fruity notes (banana and pear) with white pepper. T: Banana and other fruity notes such as apple and banana to begin with. Plenty of yeast and bread with some more white pepper notes. There actually seems to be a mild pumpkin flavor to it. M: The body is light to medium with medium carbonation. O: A different kind of pumpkin beer, which I like. It helps to break up the monotony of the same handful of spices in every beer.

A hazed golden amber with a thin lacing mocha head. In aroma, smooth spiced up malt, with pumpkin spices and white pepper flakes, coriander, beautiful. In mouth, a smooth spiced up saison with white pepper, prange peels, tingly mouthfeel, superb and balanced. On tap at brewpub, Oct. 10 2011.

On tap at the 2009 Great Pumpkin Festival, Cambridge Brewing Company, Cambridge MA on 31 October 2009 at 5.5%. Mid orange colour. Like the pumpkin Berliner Weisse I sampled immediately before the spicing is well judged and not too all pervading, allowing the underlying beer to show its colours. Aniseed is the most noticeable of the spices but quite subtle. There’s a slight farmyard feel with a hint of tartness. Fairly fruity (citrus and apple) with just a touch of nutty and grainy malt. Clean, crisp and refreshing. Probably not one for the spice bomb enthusiasts but I rather enjoyed it.

@Elysian Pumkinfest2009. Hazy amber with a thin head. Sourdough bread and pumpkin flesh aromas. Nice lightly sweet brown sugar, pumpkin, allspice clove flavors with some dark multi grain bread. Good pumpkin brew.

Deep orange color with ring of head, a pumpkin-inspired appearance. Bouquet bursts with sugar pumpkin, allspice, perhaps mace, warming cinnamon, and brown sugar, tweaked by cloves. The cloviness proves considerably more dominant on the palate, overpowering the pumpkin, but cinnamon and sugar are there to wrap it all up. Overall, a highly enjoyable pumpkin brew and one of the standouts from Elysian’s 2009 Pumpkin Beer Fest.

Tap at brewpub. Aroma of Earthy herbal saison dupont farm character backed by a bright slighly sweet pumkin character. Finishes with a crisp, slightly citric orangepeel and graham cracker character. Nice incorporation of pumpkins. Wow. Super clean, tasty, and drinkable. Exceeded expectations. Great beer.

On tap at the brewpub. Aroma is a cold, srong cinnamon, star anise and ginger. Pours a very even, dingy murked amber-orange-brown, with absolutely no head. Flavor is a pretty standard pumpkin ale, with a twinge of Belgian yeast. The star anise comes through pretty stong and throws off the pumpkin pie character for me a little. It’s hard for me to fairly evaluate this beer, because I brewed a Belgian-style pumpkin ale last fall that I think is better than this, so it’s hard for me to fully appreciate the belgian character of this beer. Soapy. Strong spice character. Fresh, otherwise. Little pumpkin meat character. In the end, not a terrible fall spiced pumpkin beer, but there’s really nothing special about it.

Defined farmhouse aroma. Gold tinged with orange. Earthy, squashy, spicey tones. Notes: Beer Advocate Belgian Beer Fest ’09
