Formerly known as Winter Ale.
Our Winter seasonal beer is here! Originally brewed in September of 1992 at the request of three bartenders/managers (who have since gone on to great fame and glory) Big Man Ale has been a favorite seasonal brew at Cambridge Brewing Company ever since. Legend has it that the grist weight of Big Man Ale was their combined total weight – 770 pounds of malt! Deep copper-colored and unfiltered (as are all of CBC’s beers), it boasts a full body complemented by strong, robust flavors. Its rich notes of malt and caramel are offset by very aggressive hopping—it is kettle-hopped with Columbus, Cascade and Centennial hops and further dry-hopped with even more Cascades and Amarillo. These hop varieties lend a fruity, citrusy character to this big malty beer, vaguely in the style of a strong stock ale or I.P.A. We just call it the Big Man.

This brew pours with a deep amber body topped by a medium thick head with lots of lacing. The aroma is sweet and malty with caramel notes. The flavor is sweet and malty with a touch of caramel and candy notes. Medium to full bodied and smooth yet dry.

Growler from CBC. Pours light mahogany into a shaker. Fluffy tan head with good retention slowly recedes leaving spider lacing. Caramel and resin aromas. Well balanced and crisp upfront with a lasting resin finish. I’d call it an American Strong ale similar to an Arrogant Bastard. Improves tremendously as it warms...

Bottle. Copper, light tan head with some lacing. Nose is citrus, biscuits, caramel. Taste is citrus fruits, biscuits, burnt caramel and hops in the finish. Lasting bitterness. Great malt character.

Pours from a bottle a dark cloudy copper with a thick off-white head. Aroma is apples, pine resin. Flavor is a well-balanced sweetness, floral, and bitterness. A good brew for the winter.

On tap at Bukowski’s in Boston (16oz for a paltry $2 with their dinner special!). I had this one after having the Great Divide Hercules Double IPA, so I had concerns that the taste from the heaven-in-a-glass that was the Hercules was going to linger in the mouth and overpower the Big Man Winter Ale. Well, that was an unnecessary worry. This one more than held its own against stiff competition. Rich, full and surprisingly hoppy. I guess I was expecting a more typically malty "winter ale" and was pleasantly surprised with what I got.

Poured from the tap into a pint glass. The color is a hazy gold with about two and half fingers of white foamy head with some nice lacing. The smell is a floral flavor with some citrus flavor. A nice mix of grapefruit and lemon is really nice. The taste is pretty piney and has a great sharp hoppy flavor that is pretty enticing. I liked the good malty finish that evened out this beer and really made a great flavorful experience. The feel of this beer was light and really even. There was some hops that wanted take too much of a stab at the easy drinking of this beer but it was all just washed away in the end.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma is fruity, hoppy and slight toasted malty. Solid grapefruity to pinewood hoppy. Mild peachy too. Lingering thick malty and grapefruity hoppy finish. Nice.

On tap at the source. Pours a slightly hazy golden to amber color with a decent off white head that displays moderate retention and minimal lace. Smells of citrus, lots of grapefruit and juicy floral hops. Bready toasty malt provides enough of a backbone to keep this in check. Taste is slightly harsh in bitterness with a bunch of pine and citrus. Malts sweep in bready caramel and toasty to balance this out a little. Medium body and carbonation level with a slick resinous mouthfeel. I enjoyed this one its a nice flavorful IPA.

Tap flight at the brewery. This taster came out with a dark golden, light amber pour with the THICKEST head I have ever seen in a taster glass and quite possibly ANY beer glass. It literally flowed over the edge like the crust on a pot pie our a soufflé, rising about an inch over the glass and even draping over the side like a beret without dripping down. Unbelievable. 5. The lacing is like the spray on bed liner in a pick up truck. Rediculous. Aroma of sweat socks 4. Taste is very hoppy but propped up by a sturdy malt backbone. The familiar coffee roast flavor of CBCs beers is present here, too. Almost reminds me of Mikkeller Coffee IPA. 9. Chewey in the mouth. 4. Delightful. 17.

Tap @ CBC – Dark copper, lightly tanned creamy head. Nose held spicy hop notes with light minty chocolate and caramel malt undertones. Toasted nutty chocolate and soft mint flavor balances on a spicy hop bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, lightly bittersweet finish. Very well made…
