3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, USA - APR 1, 2005
New England Road Trip Easter ’05 with MartinT, tiggmtl and Rastacouere, beer #57. Sample at the brewpub. Medium-thick body, near-black with little head...roasty, chocolaty nose, simple but effective...solid, robust, bitter cappucino and baker’s chocolate in the body, very dense, bitter and somewhat chalky at the finish with all the sugar near the front.

Decent porter, pretty standard, nothing really jumping out at me, but all in all better than average, nutty smokey flavor to it.

6th August 2009 Cask at GBBF. Very dark brown beer, just about transparent. Softish palate. Rich malt with a light roast. Well hopped. Not bad, perhaps a bit hoppy.

Smell like a porter, but too American for me, I mean, its dryness and astringency are too much in evidence.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 HighWine (506) - Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA - MAR 4, 2012
Tap at the brewery. Dark brown pour with a thick light brown head that laces really well. 5. Nose of French Roast coffee and vanilla extract. 8. This is one of the best porters I’ve had. Ever-so-slightly sweet up front with BIG roasty flavors after that. The hops blend perfectly well to round out the flavors and keep this from being much more than one dimensional. 8. Slippery in the mouth and a nice lingering strong coffee flavor. 4. O: 18

On draft at the brew pub. Almost black color. Coffee, nuts, with a nice roastiness.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 baraciisch (606) - USA - NOV 19, 2011
Not much aroma... Deep brown in color.. A lot of coffee notes, nutty, not particularly smooth... Had better, but not bad.... Had it on cask as well... Cask conditioning brings out a lot of smoothness and crispness of beer... Not as nutty, coffee less prevalent... Hop finish is more present... Definitely better on cask....

Very dark brown to black beer, creamy beige to brown head, bit stable, non adhesive. Aroma: mocha, dark caramel, nuts, sugary, some alcohol. MF: soft carbon, full body. Taste: roasted nuts, roasted malts, mocha, coffee, hop bitter. Aftertaste: coffee, roasted, bitter ashes.

A: The pour is a very dark brown, almost black, color with a finger of khaki colored head.
S: Strong roasted malt and dark chocolate character. Plenty of licorice and molasses with lots of earthy qualities to it as well. There is a bit of toffee sweetness, maybe some hints of smoke.
T: The flavor is quite nice with a subtle bitterness from the roast and the hops. Lots of roasted malt flavor including coffee and bitter dark chocolate. Some more earthy notes, molasses, and toffee.
M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation.
O: A solid porter. I could have used a bit more chocolate flavor/sweetness, but still solid.

On cask at CBC the Saturday night after Belgian Beer Fest up in Boston. Pours a deep black with a medium sized beige head. Coffee, roast, gorgeous caramel and roast. Super smooth, chocolate and roast. Long chocolate and big roast bitterness.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 kramer (3455) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 1, 2011
Tap, brewpub. Pours a clear dark brown body with a thin film of brown head. The nose is a touch sweet with some chocolate, light roast, and maybe a touch of light butter. The flavor is on the sweeter side, lots of burnt caramel with some licorice, molassas, and that touch of diacetyl. Minimal to no bitterness. Mouthfeel is a touch clingy and sticky with moderate fizzy carbonation. Not my preference as far as the style goes and the diacetyl is a turn off.
