COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Herbal beer with handpicked heather flowers From out of the darkness of pre-recorded history, Heather Ale is an altogether unique brew. Originally crafted by the inhabitants of coastal Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and the Northern British Isles, fresh heather flowers and other herbs were used to balance and flavor the rustic yet sweet toasted character of the malted barley. Its brewing tradition existed long before the advent of hopped beers, and has continued, sporadically, in small rural communities for millennia. Brewed with imported Scottish floor-malted barley, fresh hand-harvested heather flowers were added to the kettle during the boil along with sweet gale and lavender, with a further addition of fresh heather and yarrow to the conditioning tanks. Each year the CBC brewstaff handpicks the fresh herbs for this beer from a field along the Atlantic Coast, and adds them into the brewkettle the very next day. The aroma and flavor are a surprising jog of ancient memory, with commingling subtle notes of heather and honey and an obscure wildflower spiciness complemented by the interplay of mild but assertive, toasty-sweet malt. Medium bodied, light amber-gold in color, with a dry finish that hints at tartness. Special thanks to our friends for their support with this year’s harvest, and to everyone at Sylvan Nurseries in beautiful Westport, MA for allowing us to harvest from their blossoming heather fields. Slainte! ~Will Meyers, Brewmaster Note: Pregnant or breastfeeding women may wish to avoid consuming this beer due to the mild medicinal nature of the herbs used in crafting this beer.

22oz bottle in a lager glass. Pours amber with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of caramel and toasted notes from the malts, plus floral hops. There is also a grape-like and herbal character from the flowers. Flavor a nice blend of these. Average texture. An interesting and unique beer.

Bomber. Pours a deep amber-gold, decent frothy white head with excellent retention and lacing. Nose is earthiness redolent of wildflowers on a warm summer day, with some cedar and caramel. Mouth is very light bodied, tastes like I described in the aroma, with a light nutty sweetness, some nutmeg and white pepper, toasty bread. A bit thin... a bigger maltier backbone would serve this well as a winter warmer for sure (even if it is a warm muggy July night in Chicago... prairie wisdom has always warned to not get lulled into complacency of the summertime). I saw this while at the Beer Temple and realized I couldn’t pass this up, solely on account of it sharing the name of my soul-mate... who, while she is back in Cleveland and hasn’t had a chance to try this, would most likely agree that her namesake beer would benefit from a bit more body. That said, I don’t hate this beer... and Heather, I love you, baby... even if it is currently from far away. 😊 Slàinte!

Bomber from the pig at market common. These guys take a gimmick and do it strong. This is no exception. Lots of floral and herbal flavors. Bit of a fruitiness as well. Light bodied and easy to drink.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Nikki’s Liquor, 6/22/15

Aroma: The aroma is as expected, floral and herbal, with some light bready malt notes
Appearance: It pours an unclear orange color with a small, sheeting off-white head and light lacing
Flavor: Tastes similar, but the floral component is stronger in the flavor than the aroma
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has an average-plus carbonation, and a fairly short duration
Overall Impression: I thought this one was decent. The components that are here all work fine together, but I just didn’t hey anything super enjoyable out of the combination. It’s fine.

Pours a cloudy golden brown from the bomber with fluffy off-white head that dissipates to leave moderate lace. Aroma of herbal and floral notes over pale and caramel malts. Taste is more malt forward than the nose, but still a nice floral quality over the malt. Bubbly carbonation, quick clean finish, not bad.

22oz bottle, from Dutch’s. Bottled 8/13/14. Pours a hazy darker amber color, with a thin, loudly fizzing khaki head. It’s like pouring a soft drink. Fades to a thin amount, leaves a couple splotches of lace. Medium body. Medium body. Kind of soft, stronger carbonation. Good mild toasty malt, bright floral flavor. Pear. Some fall-type spice. Hint of cinnamon baked apple. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter. Hint of tartness. Interesting stuff. Nice flavor, but texture is a little forced. Gets better after it sits for a half hour and the carbonation has a chance to die down. Decent to wash my sandwich down with, but the best choice as a flavor complement.
