COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
CBC, Stone Brewing Co., and Victory Brewing Co. collaboration beer! What’s in a name? Let’s take the name Venus - it is many things. It is the second planet from the sun and from viewed from Earth, the morning and evening star. It is the name of the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility. The Venus symbol ♀ represents female gender. It is an alchemical elemental symbol for copper, which also happens to be the traditional name for a brewkettle! So why Project Venus? At the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO last September, an idea was hatched among three brewers to collaborate on a recipe together. That’s not such an uncommon occurrence as brewers all over the world are collaborating these days. The unusual aspect of this collaboration is that this trio of brewers is female. This should not be so atypical, but in reality it is. As far as we know, this is the first major collaboration in which all the brewers are women, but that alone is not what is special about this beer. Rather it is the spirit of camaraderie and creativity that makes a project like this come together. Project Venus is a strong Belgian Dubbel, complemented with the juicy body and slight acidity of fresh oranges, the delicate texture of orange blossom honey, and the rich but obscure, spicy aroma of saffron. Saffron is also considered by some to be an aphrodisiac, a term associated with Aphrodite, the Greek mythological equivalent to the Romans’ Venus. It was a real pleasure to work with Laura Ulrich from Stone and Whitney Thompson from Victory, putting our ideas together to develop a shared vision. It is exciting to see how other brewers think about flavor and brewing, to see how they approach realizing that vision, and to then bring all those ideas together to make the final product. Project Venus could be the beginning of a series of collaborations highlighting the women behind the brewkettles around the world. Or it could be a stand alone venture that draws a little more attention to our presence in the field. In the end, either will help make it a little less unusual that three women brewers can get together and bring you a delicious beer. Ultimately, it’s what’s in the glass that we hope you will remember most. Cheers! In short: A fruity caramelized ale with a fun spiciness. Good beer
How: Tap at Extreme Beer Fest 2011
The look: Cloudy bronze body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose is fruity (both hops fruity and yeasty fruity). Taste is plenty of caramelized malts, oranges and some other juicy fruits, floral notes, a nice original spicy twist. Nice beer that seemed very easy to drink for a 9% brew. So I read here that Project Venus is a collaboration between three women brewers. Cool. The best three women collaboration since that scene in Slutty Housewives IV.

A hazed copper brown ale with a thin creamy lacing moka head. In aroma, a superb fragrant coriander and curacao, gin alcohol, juniper berries. In mouth, a smooth oily malt with nice coriander, ginger, quite nice. On tap at brewpub, April 17 2011.

On tap at CBC over EBF weekend. Poured an opaque but clean orange brown. Smell is dark fruits, rind, and a sweet molasses and booze back. Taste is nice with orange rind, sweet malts and a slight hop pop. You go girls!

On tap at the brewpub. Poured a hazy amber orange with a light brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a nice combination of citrus and a bit of orange rind with a backing sweet grains note. Flavor began with orange rind with a hint of citrus and backing sweet grains and caramel.

On tap @ Sunset Grill and Tap. Golden yellow in color nice amount of carbonation that produced small ring of head. Aroma is of grapes (reminds me of grape bubblegum with a sugary aroma). My friend said a grape Kool Aid packet. The grape sugar is up front in the taste. But it fades into the floral saffron spice for a finish. Reminds me of Dogfish Head Midas Touch. Very nice, smooth flowing beer that can easily be drank. If you find this on tap, get it!

Pours a cloudy mahogany into a snifter. Off-white head creates sheet lacing as it recedes to skim surface. Dark pit fruit aromas. Soft with full sweet honey, apricots and fig upfront turning to a dry, lasting dusty finish.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is fruity, caramelish and towards roasted. Yeasty, fruity, slight spiced and mild orange fruity flavoured. Lingering caramelish dark malty. Mild citric touch, yet smooth and well rounded. Rather strong for a Belgian Dubbel.
