2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 3fourths (6400) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - APR 23, 2008
Pours mostly clear gold with a white head. Perfumy cereal grains, corn and that “lager-like” fuesal/fruit/urine deal, with a bit of black pepper smelled and tasted as well. Simple, a bit putrid or moldy, and overall a pretty big disappointment, which seems to be quite common with American brewpub-made Kolsch.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 13, 2006
UPDATED: MAR 4, 2006 Any first impressions?
-A frail head covers the clear golden/yellow shine.
-Hay protrudes shyly in an otherwise unexciting aroma.
-Creamy straw, clean grain, and wet bready pils malt form a solid base for quenching.
-The very drinkable, lean body gets a little watery at times.
What if you dig deeper?
-The slight lactic quality I often taste in Kölsches is diluted here.
-There are supporting earthy hops under the grain.
-Citrus fruit rest atop the hefty hay.
-A well-made, very drinkable, not too malty Kölsch, with some reminiscence of their Vienna Gold.
On tap at Redbones.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Rastacouere (5920) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 23, 2006
Initially restrained aromatics grow more confident as it warms, offering lemon and floral peaks. The pour is a clear light straw, bright and very lightly carbonated, situation betrayed by the very limited white head. Clean fermented, gently fruity, with soft edges, refreshing mellow tartness. Rather thin and watery, but well lifted up hop flavours in mouth.
