3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ClarkVV (3578) - Allston, Massachusetts, USA - NOV 18, 2004
UPDATED: JUL 16, 2007 2004 draught @ the brewery. Light golden, orange tinges, small white head, mostly clear. Aroma of hay, grass clippings, and a touch of hops on the end. Flavor starts out crisp, lightly bitter and has a good malt graininess. Finish has plenty of spicy hops and then it ends cleanly and quickly. Not much wateriness, and relative to the style, this is a big golden ale. Not too sweet, which was very enjoyable, and also not too bitter. Didnt find this bland in the least bit and quite the contrary it was perfectly refreshing and drinkable. Moderate, but not stinging, carbonation, medium-light body.
Update. After drinking this stuff at almost every visit, it rarely disappoints with a bad batch. I have a little diacetyl in it, from time to time, but never is it not drinkable and satisfying. Also, if you get it right after it’s just been brewed, it’s nearly divine, with tons of fresh hop character, crisp, fresh malts and a beautiful, delicate yeast character. Really, really good stuff. I’d say on average it’s about a 3.6 or 3.7, but when at it’s peak, it’s easily a 4.1 or 4.2

Draft @ CBC - Sparkling gold, thin creamy white head. Nice buttery floral nose that tilts more fruity, earthy and slightly bready as it warmed. Fruity floral hop flavor is balanced with soft buttered bread notes. Light bodied, light carbonation, lightly bittersweet finish. Very drinkable on this warm Boston evening...
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 13, 2006
UPDATED: MAR 4, 2006 Any first impressions?
-A frail head covers the clear golden/yellow shine.
-Hay protrudes shyly in an otherwise unexciting aroma.
-Creamy straw, clean grain, and wet bready pils malt form a solid base for quenching.
-The very drinkable, lean body gets a little watery at times.
What if you dig deeper?
-The slight lactic quality I often taste in Kölsches is diluted here.
-There are supporting earthy hops under the grain.
-Citrus fruit rest atop the hefty hay.
-A well-made, very drinkable, not too malty Kölsch, with some reminiscence of their Vienna Gold.
On tap at Redbones.
