Saison-style ale with Peppercorns. It was twenty years ago today… Well, almost twenty years ago today, as we present to you the first of three special Anniversary Beers in celebration of our upcoming Twentieth Anniversary! It was April Fool’s Day, 1989, when Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne first opened the doors to what would become one of the preeminent breweries in the country. Of course, true to the spirit of the day, it would be another month before the first house-made beers would be available on draft. Sgt. Pepper has been brewed with Pilsner, CaraVienne, and Rye malts, plus Magnum and Spalter hops. But the driving force behind this beer is the contribution from whole peppercorns! Black, Green, White, and Pink Peppercorns were added to the brewkettle, and they provide a noticeable fresh, herbal spiciness to the nose and through the palate. Pink pepper provides a high, floral character mostly as an aromatic, and Green pepper offers an herbal freshness with slight heat. White pepper contributes a subtle earthiness, and Black pepper engages the palate in a lingering, tingling warmth. All combine to accentuate the complexities of our Belgian yeast, and are balanced by crisp malt character with a hint of sweetness. OG: 1.054 (13.5*P) FG: 1.008 (2*P) ABV: 6.0%

On tap at The Festival. Light haze, pale gold pour with white head. Fruity aroma, lots of pepper, some pear notes. Peppery flavor, more fruity pear notes, a bit of an odd mix of fruit and spice. Not bad per se, but not my cup of tea.

Bottle. VERY unique flavor--four whole peppercorns combine in the brewing process to make a peppery noise & almost cayenne-like aftertaste. Nice, drinkable, complex Saison. Recommended. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours clear orange/copper with a thin white head. Aroma is dominated by mainly black and green peppers, caramel, herbs, yeast and very light rye’ish spice. It’s almost impossible to make out anything but pepper. Taste is light+ sweet and light bitter. Body slight+, texture is oily, carbonation is near flat. Finishes spicy and with substantial pepper burn. Quite simple and one-tracked, probably does exactly what was intended but the peppers almost overpowers everything else in the aroma.

Bomber from Bine & Vine. Pours translucent gold with a foamy white head. Aroma is spicy - but there seems to be some greenery as well. Med body. Flavor is definitely peppery/spicy, but there’s also some Belgian yeast fruity ester - arguably banana/pineapple. Quite a mixed bag of flavors here. Finishes fruity/spicy/dryish. Pepper heat as well. Might go really well with pizza.

5 oz. taster from @ the brew pub. Clear gold color. The nose is almost nothing but peppercorns with a trace of yeast. The taste is biscuit malts and an intense amount of peppercorn. For me the flavor is drowned completely out by pepper. It’ s really to get any other flavors from the blast of pepper. For me this brew was a big disappointment and I waited to sample this on draft. Just not for me.

Bottle. Clear copper with a small white head. Aroma is pepper, caramel, light wort, rye, fruity. Taste is medium sweet with some lasting pepper heat. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. The pepper is pretty much overpowering hop and yeast notes, but the heat is nice.

Pours to a golden body with a thin white head. The aroma is a variety of peppercorns with a rye, earthy yeast, and subtle Belgian yeast. The flavor is very muddled. Pretty much like an earthy peppery malt. While not overly spicy, the peppery flavor is there. Strange choice of yeast. Easy drinking and clean palate.
