Saison-style ale with Peppercorns. It was twenty years ago today… Well, almost twenty years ago today, as we present to you the first of three special Anniversary Beers in celebration of our upcoming Twentieth Anniversary! It was April Fool’s Day, 1989, when Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne first opened the doors to what would become one of the preeminent breweries in the country. Of course, true to the spirit of the day, it would be another month before the first house-made beers would be available on draft. Sgt. Pepper has been brewed with Pilsner, CaraVienne, and Rye malts, plus Magnum and Spalter hops. But the driving force behind this beer is the contribution from whole peppercorns! Black, Green, White, and Pink Peppercorns were added to the brewkettle, and they provide a noticeable fresh, herbal spiciness to the nose and through the palate. Pink pepper provides a high, floral character mostly as an aromatic, and Green pepper offers an herbal freshness with slight heat. White pepper contributes a subtle earthiness, and Black pepper engages the palate in a lingering, tingling warmth. All combine to accentuate the complexities of our Belgian yeast, and are balanced by crisp malt character with a hint of sweetness. OG: 1.054 (13.5*P) FG: 1.008 (2*P) ABV: 6.0%

Bottlle (22 oz). Thanks to David! Clear straw color with a medium diminishing white head and no lacing. Aroma is of spices (mainly pepper, but quite complex spices mix) with malt, yeast and floral notes. Taste is slightly sweet, floral at first, but when the peppercorns are in there, they leave no place for anything else. Spicy/peppery finish. Medium body. Peppery/hot. Lack of drinkability/balance because of the peppercorn. I had a hard time finishing my glass. Interesting aroma, but it’s overdone.

Aroma is complex spiciness, rye malts and a hint of sweetness. The flavor is citrus, fruit, rye/barley malts and a spicy heat in the finish from the peppercorns.

Brew at AZ crews driveway tasting. Pours orange withnwhite head. Nose of citrus and peppercorns. Tastes of citrus, yeast, floral, light banana, then plenty of peppercorns. Not quite the burn of the recent peppercorn saison I had from 508 but that’s probably for the best. Pretty tasty

Pale, hazy yellow pour with a white head. Nice saison yeast flavor up front, some hay, barnyard funk, leather and then the burn of peppercorns. No question that peppercorns were used here!

Pours heavy gold, with a short, off-white head. Scent is Belgian yeast, funk.... Taste is yeasty, citrusy, with a very nice peppercorn heat and sting. Slightly flat, but enjoyable.

Bottled. Cloud copper pour. Bright white head faded fast. Spicy yeast nose. Peppery. Lemony. Biscuity malt balanced with a citrusy finish. The peppercorn burn really comes through in the aftertaste and is quite long lasting. Medium mouthfeel. Could be a little more carbonated. Pretty enjoyable. The peppercorn was a little much but it grew on me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy from my iPad.

650 ml bottle @ WPBF 2013.
Pours a slightly cloudy golden colour with a white head. Aroma of grassy hops, some floral notes, grains and maybe some vegetables. Flavour of grassy hops, caramel malts, really strong pepper, floral notes and some hay. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and a peppery malty finish. Really nice peppery notes, but the vegetable notes disturb here. It seems that the base beer is quite bland. Nice beer anyway.

65 cl bottle @ wPBF’13.
Pours golden color with no head. Aroma of corn, vegetables, grass and spices. Flavor of spices, fruits and pale malts. Some chili notes on the aftertaste. Starts quite boring leading to a surprisingly good finish.

Aroma is stale and a bit odd with peppery spices and hints of apricot. Flavour has peppery spices, burning chili and some fruity notes in the background. Actually the burning spiciness is quite nice. Then again the beer underneath the spices is quite nothing.
