Saison-style ale with Peppercorns. It was twenty years ago today… Well, almost twenty years ago today, as we present to you the first of three special Anniversary Beers in celebration of our upcoming Twentieth Anniversary! It was April Fool’s Day, 1989, when Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne first opened the doors to what would become one of the preeminent breweries in the country. Of course, true to the spirit of the day, it would be another month before the first house-made beers would be available on draft. Sgt. Pepper has been brewed with Pilsner, CaraVienne, and Rye malts, plus Magnum and Spalter hops. But the driving force behind this beer is the contribution from whole peppercorns! Black, Green, White, and Pink Peppercorns were added to the brewkettle, and they provide a noticeable fresh, herbal spiciness to the nose and through the palate. Pink pepper provides a high, floral character mostly as an aromatic, and Green pepper offers an herbal freshness with slight heat. White pepper contributes a subtle earthiness, and Black pepper engages the palate in a lingering, tingling warmth. All combine to accentuate the complexities of our Belgian yeast, and are balanced by crisp malt character with a hint of sweetness. OG: 1.054 (13.5*P) FG: 1.008 (2*P) ABV: 6.0%

Aroma is stale and a bit odd with peppery spices and hints of apricot. Flavour has peppery spices, burning chili and some fruity notes in the background. Actually the burning spiciness is quite nice. Then again the beer underneath the spices is quite nothing.

Thanks drew. Hazed gold with white head. Light malt a little pepper. Light malt flavors with a stronmg pepper. Green spicy pepper. Spicy finish. Too much pepper. 7/4/6/3/12

Bottle via ImstilltheGman! Pours an orange color, small head. Nose of black pepper, orange, spices and earth notes. Tastes is lots of black peppercorn, spices, earthy notes, light orange and malt back bone. I really like the black peppercorn taste. Medium body, good amount of carbonation. Overall: This is the second time I had this beer, this time was my own bottle paired with a nice steak dinner. Very enjoyable. Thanks GUY! In memory of TFC

Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours hazy dark straw with off-white head. Nose is hopcitrus, pale malt, big black pepper. Tastes pale malty, intense and well carbonated, with hopcitrus, and a high level of black pepper flavor, which I enjoy immensely. Some in the Craft Ale House tasting room did not like this one, but it reminded me of the Furthermore black pepper beer, which I loved.

Draft. Creamy off-white head atop clear amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, orange, some white pepper. Taste is medium sweet, pepper, some orange, light pepper burn. Light-medium body, low carbonation.

Bottle shared by Drew, I think. Pours an orangey gold with a persistent white head. Nose is loaded with orange peel. Not much in the way of pepper in the nose. Some earthy and fruity notes. On tasting, fruity but it has a muddy palate. Earthy, light tartness. Pepper is low overall, some light heat. Weird and not really anything special.

Bottle at the office w/ coworkers. Pours a cloudy gold with thin off-white head, no lace. Aroma of hay, pepper, grass, rye, light citrus. Light body with the spice from the pepper very apparent. Sweet, fruity finish.

On tap at Churchkey during CBC week. Pours a clear dark gold with zero head. Nose is a nice mix of green peppercorns, candy sugar, over ripe fruit, cheese. Flavor has bright fruit but also earthy peppercorns, apples, jalapeno, malt, hay, grass. Medium bodied, sweet and spicy finish. I really liked the combination.

22 oz bottle shared by Drew. Thanks, dude! Pours a deeper orange golden hue, mellow haze, lively carbonation, and frothy whitish head atop. Some fiery orange glow atop laces ok. Nice deeper glow and color. Aromas are a bit spicy, white and green peppercorns, some bready malts, touches of florals and earth. Richer peach fruit sweetness and tangerine rind. Some gentle sweetness, touches of orange, pear. Bready, mellow yeasty and estery fruit. Initial is lighter body, fizzy and dry, mellow yeast, some richer dryness, bubbly and a touch champagney. Some gentle sweetness, touches of spice and peppery elements come on into the middle and backend. Some spicy life, yeast and peppercorns meld into some heat into the back, earthy peppercorns and cracked pepper. Touches of fruit up front die out and let the pepper pop on the palate. Dry and light into the finish, some nice flavors, kinda a nice experience as it runs the gambit. Without the pepper, this would be quite forgetable. But as is, it’s interesting.
