Saison-style ale with Peppercorns. It was twenty years ago today… Well, almost twenty years ago today, as we present to you the first of three special Anniversary Beers in celebration of our upcoming Twentieth Anniversary! It was April Fool’s Day, 1989, when Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne first opened the doors to what would become one of the preeminent breweries in the country. Of course, true to the spirit of the day, it would be another month before the first house-made beers would be available on draft. Sgt. Pepper has been brewed with Pilsner, CaraVienne, and Rye malts, plus Magnum and Spalter hops. But the driving force behind this beer is the contribution from whole peppercorns! Black, Green, White, and Pink Peppercorns were added to the brewkettle, and they provide a noticeable fresh, herbal spiciness to the nose and through the palate. Pink pepper provides a high, floral character mostly as an aromatic, and Green pepper offers an herbal freshness with slight heat. White pepper contributes a subtle earthiness, and Black pepper engages the palate in a lingering, tingling warmth. All combine to accentuate the complexities of our Belgian yeast, and are balanced by crisp malt character with a hint of sweetness. OG: 1.054 (13.5*P) FG: 1.008 (2*P) ABV: 6.0%

transparent honey gold, thinnest white ring head. Nose and flavor of light celery, brown sugar, and bubblegum hints, estery finish, hot throughout.

Very faint aroma, vaguely banana, corn. The appearance is drab, thin, watery, very light head. Taste is plain with a bit of rye, until a strong pepper bite kicks in on the aftertaste, especially on the tip of the tongue. Unique but not particularly enjoyable. Label art is great.

Robert brought this one back from a trip to Boston. +++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark golden color with a medium sized foamy white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was yeasty and funky with a strong black pepper presence and dryish, almost musty undertones. The flavor was dry and very peppery, a bit spicy and musty. Long dry pepper finish. Medium body. Interesting.

Bomber poured into a tall lager glass. Hazy pale yellow. I don’t get much on the nose, except pepper is present, not overwhelming. Base beer is pretty tasty. Earth/ straw. Decent flavor, little scorch of pepper on the back of the throat. Lingers nicely. Dry finish. Not my style, but I’m not upset about the purchase.

Bottle... Hazy amber ale with a small, creamy, white head. Excellent retention. The nose presents fuzzy fruits and peppery, floral, earthy notes. Light-bodied with jazzy carbonation. Nice, fruity, peppery-warm flavor. Plenty of pepper spiciness and warmth in the finish.

Pour from a bottle thanks to a generous trade extra. Golden orange color in the glass. Aromas are of pepper and lemon citrus. Flavors are initially of tangerine and a touch of sweet malt. The peppercorns make their presence known mid palate and on the finish. The slight heat lingers nicely and balances well. Medium in body. Very solid and tasty beer.

Bottle shared by brew3crew. Pours a hazy orange amber color with a medium sized, but quickly diminishing white head. The aroma certainly showcases the peppercorns; black pepper, some floral notes, spicy rye and a splash of fruit. The flavor has all of the nose with some earthy notes and some grass. Interesting brew.

Bread, yeast, and a pleasant white pepper aroma. Flavor is dominated by pepper, as is the finish. Gimmicky, but OK.

Great stuff here. Heavy peppercorns and spicyness accent the yeast well. Banana and berry esthers with coriander and grass. Very drinkable and highly enjoyable.
