Saison-style ale with Peppercorns. It was twenty years ago today… Well, almost twenty years ago today, as we present to you the first of three special Anniversary Beers in celebration of our upcoming Twentieth Anniversary! It was April Fool’s Day, 1989, when Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne first opened the doors to what would become one of the preeminent breweries in the country. Of course, true to the spirit of the day, it would be another month before the first house-made beers would be available on draft. Sgt. Pepper has been brewed with Pilsner, CaraVienne, and Rye malts, plus Magnum and Spalter hops. But the driving force behind this beer is the contribution from whole peppercorns! Black, Green, White, and Pink Peppercorns were added to the brewkettle, and they provide a noticeable fresh, herbal spiciness to the nose and through the palate. Pink pepper provides a high, floral character mostly as an aromatic, and Green pepper offers an herbal freshness with slight heat. White pepper contributes a subtle earthiness, and Black pepper engages the palate in a lingering, tingling warmth. All combine to accentuate the complexities of our Belgian yeast, and are balanced by crisp malt character with a hint of sweetness. OG: 1.054 (13.5*P) FG: 1.008 (2*P) ABV: 6.0%

Bottle shared by brew3crew. Pours a hazy orange amber color with a medium sized, but quickly diminishing white head. The aroma certainly showcases the peppercorns; black pepper, some floral notes, spicy rye and a splash of fruit. The flavor has all of the nose with some earthy notes and some grass. Interesting brew.

Bread, yeast, and a pleasant white pepper aroma. Flavor is dominated by pepper, as is the finish. Gimmicky, but OK.

Great stuff here. Heavy peppercorns and spicyness accent the yeast well. Banana and berry esthers with coriander and grass. Very drinkable and highly enjoyable.

Big saison head, tons if pepper on the nose. Taste is creamy thick saison type yeast with lots of pepper. I really like it.

Fresh rye aroma. Light and smooth and has taste of pleasant spicy pepper. Good beer for summer night. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22 oz. bottle that I purchased at the brewpub. Pours a clear gold with a thin-moderate white head that faded to a film after the second sip and left very little lace. I get mostly pilsner malt in the aroma with some breadiness to it along with some noticeable pepper and some floral notes. The flavor is more spicy with malt, some fruity Belgian yeast, rye, and then the peppercorns kick in and release some moderate heat in the back of the throat that lingers for about thirty seconds, slowly subsiding. Medium bodied and quite enjoyable!

22oz bottle picked up at the brewpub. Batch 1, bottled February 2012. Pours a lightly hazed, darker golden colored body with a finger-width, frothy and fizzy, off-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is bigger peppercorns with an herbal, earthy, and slightly hot note. Some florals, a light pale malt backing, some Belgian yeast with a light coriander, and a touch of rye spice. Flavor is lightly sweetened, grainy pale malts up front with some Belgian yeast before the peppercorns come in. Herbal and earthy with a light spicing. Florals and a light coriander before this finishes dry with a nice mix of herbal, earthy, and slightly hot peppercorns as well as a lightly sweetened pale malt. Light bitterness before leaving a fairly lengthy aftertaste with the heat coming off the peppercorns a bit more. Light body and a crisp, moderate carbonation. Overall, a solid beer. Lots of peppercorn with an interesting mix of earth, herbs, and a light heat. Some florals, Belgian yeast, and spice along with a grainy pale malt backing keep the peppercorns in check. Enjoyable.

Bottle shared by B3C. Poured clear copper color with an average fizzy off-white head that mostly lasted and produced good lacing. Moderate sweet rye & pepper aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation and thin particles. Moderate spicy bitter flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

Bottle to snifter. Looks alright; orange with thin lacing. Smells solid; saison-y with noticeable pepper. Tastes alright; mild. Mouthfeel is average. Meh.

Pours clear golden with an orange hue and off white head. The aroma is sweet with a bit of farm tanginess to it. The flavor brings some saison sweetness at first and then the peppercorn hits in pure but palatable way on the tongue and throat. The peppercorn sits there for a bit as well! The body is a bit lighter for my palate for the style, but overall the saison is unique and delicious.
