COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saison-style ale with Peppercorns. It was twenty years ago today… Well, almost twenty years ago today, as we present to you the first of three special Anniversary Beers in celebration of our upcoming Twentieth Anniversary! It was April Fool’s Day, 1989, when Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne first opened the doors to what would become one of the preeminent breweries in the country. Of course, true to the spirit of the day, it would be another month before the first house-made beers would be available on draft. Sgt. Pepper has been brewed with Pilsner, CaraVienne, and Rye malts, plus Magnum and Spalter hops. But the driving force behind this beer is the contribution from whole peppercorns! Black, Green, White, and Pink Peppercorns were added to the brewkettle, and they provide a noticeable fresh, herbal spiciness to the nose and through the palate. Pink pepper provides a high, floral character mostly as an aromatic, and Green pepper offers an herbal freshness with slight heat. White pepper contributes a subtle earthiness, and Black pepper engages the palate in a lingering, tingling warmth. All combine to accentuate the complexities of our Belgian yeast, and are balanced by crisp malt character with a hint of sweetness. OG: 1.054 (13.5*P) FG: 1.008 (2*P) ABV: 6.0%

Bottle, 65 cl. Hazy golden with a small off white head, quickly disappearing. Hay, phenollic yeatsy notes, herbs, peppercorns. Lovely malty sweetness mixing with a clear, spicy pepperpunch. Some bitterness. Nice.

Thanks to Blake for bringing the bottle! Poured clear, lighter orange with a nice white head. The aroma picked up lots of peppercorns and lighter-skinned fruit/white peppery yeast.. light honey and bready support.. interesting stuff. The flavor found lots more peppercorn throughout, and it was fairly spicy.. quite a bit of floral character too.. too spicy to really be refreshing on the finish. Medium-bodied with moderate-plus carbonation.. just a bit too peppery for me.

Bottle from unknown place. Pours golden with a quarter inch of white foam. Leaves a lot of lacing in the glass. Has a bit of barnyard on the nose. A little bit of funk on the tongue. It’s solid but not amazing.

Paladar oleico y vivaz. Final y retrogusto picantes y prolongados. Compleja. 650ml bottle. Shaker glass @ Cervecería Freiburg. Golden brass color, veiled appearance. White froth leaves a thin but lasting layer on top. Belgian yeast, hints of bread, mildy toasted malts & spices as well as subtle Brett touch. Soft malty upfront & sparkling sensation. Increasing peppery & spiced flavors. Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation. Oily & funny palate. Long spicy finish & aftertaste. Complex beer.

22oz bottle, shared with caterwaul and co. More hazy orange color. Bubbly off-white head. Leaves dots of lace. Soft, smooth kind of crisp stronger carbonation. Big peppercorn aroma, pretty nice. Some orange citrus. Spicy taste, light sweet. Nice peppery saison. Really tasty. Friends really enjoyed it.

14/IX/13 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle @ Hoppy Loft (Delirium café, Brussels) - BB: n/a (2013-860)

Clear orange beer, creamy white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very weird, vegetables, soup. That’s about all I can get. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body. Taste: well, it’s pepper corns all right... bit sourish, citrus, pretty spicy, black and red pepper corns (didn’t taste the white and green ones). Aftertaste: guess... pepper corns! Pretty spicy, and a watery finish. WTF is this stuff?? When reading the description of the beer, I guess the beer itself was an April Fool’s joke on it’s own, no?

Bottle at Hoppy Loft. Bready orange nose with big black pepper and a bit of honey. Deep gold color with lace. Huge black pepper flavor practically drowns out everything else and tastes like ass. There is some lemon and bread still recognizable. This is just wrong. No wonder they are selling it off at like 7 euros.

Poured into a snifter gold slightly amber with a white head. Funky barnyard aroma. Yep like a good farmhouse ale Taste is malty hops with the feel of earth. Respectable beverage with a nice woody feel finishing with peppercorn. Slightly peppery but not as strong as would have thought. A bit more spice would make this more palatable. Overall decent & enjoyable.
