COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saison-style ale with Peppercorns. It was twenty years ago today… Well, almost twenty years ago today, as we present to you the first of three special Anniversary Beers in celebration of our upcoming Twentieth Anniversary! It was April Fool’s Day, 1989, when Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne first opened the doors to what would become one of the preeminent breweries in the country. Of course, true to the spirit of the day, it would be another month before the first house-made beers would be available on draft. Sgt. Pepper has been brewed with Pilsner, CaraVienne, and Rye malts, plus Magnum and Spalter hops. But the driving force behind this beer is the contribution from whole peppercorns! Black, Green, White, and Pink Peppercorns were added to the brewkettle, and they provide a noticeable fresh, herbal spiciness to the nose and through the palate. Pink pepper provides a high, floral character mostly as an aromatic, and Green pepper offers an herbal freshness with slight heat. White pepper contributes a subtle earthiness, and Black pepper engages the palate in a lingering, tingling warmth. All combine to accentuate the complexities of our Belgian yeast, and are balanced by crisp malt character with a hint of sweetness. OG: 1.054 (13.5*P) FG: 1.008 (2*P) ABV: 6.0%

Poured into a snifter gold slightly amber with a white head. Funky barnyard aroma. Yep like a good farmhouse ale Taste is malty hops with the feel of earth. Respectable beverage with a nice woody feel finishing with peppercorn. Slightly peppery but not as strong as would have thought. A bit more spice would make this more palatable. Overall decent & enjoyable.

Courtesy of tderoeck. Thx! 650 ml. bottle sampled during Zwanze Day shenanigans. Pours a hazy amber with a white head. Nose is soapy, chemical with a tang, bitter pepper & herbs + hops. Taste is soapy mixed with candy sugar, bitter herbs and pepper, sweet malts and herbs with some fruity hops. The peppery finish is very nice & good, I just don’t like a lot of the flavours that come before the finish, wish it was more like the finish. Frankly bit of a mess this one in my opinion. I had no issue with drinking it, not too strong as far as the intensity of the pepper goes. Full & a bit oily body. Out of the types of pepper used, I must say that I get the white one probably most. I have never had green or pink pepper.

Bottle. Amber beer with a cream head. Hay and toasted malt aroma with spice and light yeast. Spice and yeast flavor with hay. Medium bodied. Spice and hay lingers with yeast and light fruitiness.

Hazy gold pour with a 2 finger, creamy white head. Aroma is full of pepper, earthy spice, some sharp, fruity esters and a bit of cereal. Flavor is black pepper, earth, floral and planty notes and lots of doughy yeast. Medium body with a velvety entry, leading to a slightly chalky, but still creamy finish with a light, but sharp and blanketing carbonation and noticeable black pepper heat that lingers and warms the throat and stomach a bit. Good, but not really much going on besides the pepper. I really wish I would have though ahead and bought a nice juicy ribeye to accompany the rest of this bottle. That seems to be the best use for pepper heavy beers.

Bright honey colored pour with a small ivory head. Spicy black pepper, yeast, buttermilk biscuit, caramel, and grassy hops. Medium mouthfeel. Nothing earth-shattering.

Golden pour with frothy white head. Aroma has lots of spice, floral citrus, and a bit of subtle yeast. Taste is lightly sweet with a peppery crisp finish. Great beer

Picked up at Hokus Pokus in Gonzales, LA. Orange pour with a white head. The aroma is full of peppercorns with some wheat and yeast. The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of pink peppercorn notes as well as some yeast, light floral notes, light heat and biscuit malt. Very nice mix of spice and malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

The taste is very spicy, with peppercorn and white pepper. The white pepper attacks from the back of my tongue and up into my nasal cavity. Citrus flavors are of lemon and subtle orange. The finish is very spicy with grassy notes and lingering citrus. An interesting take on the style.

Sampled at esbls. I had this right after some really hot pepper salsa. A clear bourbon colored beer. Thin foam. Peppers all over this one. Not much else that I can get.

Bottle. Hazy orange tinted gold. Aroma is interesting and pleasant, with elements of biscuit malt, light yeast, dusty peppercorns, and hibiscus. For me, the hibiscus really came to stand out over the duration of this beer, but on the palate, it shared equal billing with cracked peppercorns. Interestingly, even though the peppercorn character was unmistakable (and very pleasant), there was not a lot of heat in the finish other than a transient tingling in the soft palate. I refined and tasty pepper beer.
