COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saison-style ale with Peppercorns. It was twenty years ago today… Well, almost twenty years ago today, as we present to you the first of three special Anniversary Beers in celebration of our upcoming Twentieth Anniversary! It was April Fool’s Day, 1989, when Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne first opened the doors to what would become one of the preeminent breweries in the country. Of course, true to the spirit of the day, it would be another month before the first house-made beers would be available on draft. Sgt. Pepper has been brewed with Pilsner, CaraVienne, and Rye malts, plus Magnum and Spalter hops. But the driving force behind this beer is the contribution from whole peppercorns! Black, Green, White, and Pink Peppercorns were added to the brewkettle, and they provide a noticeable fresh, herbal spiciness to the nose and through the palate. Pink pepper provides a high, floral character mostly as an aromatic, and Green pepper offers an herbal freshness with slight heat. White pepper contributes a subtle earthiness, and Black pepper engages the palate in a lingering, tingling warmth. All combine to accentuate the complexities of our Belgian yeast, and are balanced by crisp malt character with a hint of sweetness. OG: 1.054 (13.5*P) FG: 1.008 (2*P) ABV: 6.0%

Bottle shared by B3C. Poured clear copper color with an average fizzy off-white head that mostly lasted and produced good lacing. Moderate sweet rye & pepper aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation and thin particles. Moderate spicy bitter flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

On tap at CBC. Dark golden colour. Interesting idea and an interesting aroma to boot. However, on the palate, I felt that the pepper was far too dominant and swamped any saison character. Also very hot on the swallow with a lingering afterburn. One of those brews that is so far from the norm that it is difficult to evaluate as a beer. It was too much for me.

A lightly hazed golden saison with a very thin whiite head. A pleasant aroma of subdued white pepper, with honey, and coriander. In mouth, a nice peppery saison with light peppeer burn, smooth, a bit thin but overall very good. A good summer quaffer. On tap at brewpub, April 4, 2010.

GABF 2009. Pours clear yellow with an average, frothy white head, somewhat lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (hay, straw, meal), average hop (herbs, grass), average yeast (horse blanket, barnyard, earth) with notes of clove and pepper. Light bodied, gritty texture, lively carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

Pouring at session one of Belgian Beer Fest in Boston. Pours a lightly hazed gold with a medium sized white beige head. Very light peppercorn, spicy and green. Gentle pepper, musk and wheat. Warm peppercorns on the finish, spicy and very nice. Well balanced with the peppercorn flavor coming through clearly, but not dominating and throwing things out of balance.

Golden/orange in color with a white head. The pepper aroma on this is huge. That’s pretty much all I smell, actually. A bit of sweetness from the bready and toffee malt. The flavor is nice. It’s a bit sweet and very peppery. And that’s pretty much it. While enjoyable, a small pour is really all that I could handle.

On tap at the brewpub back in March 2009. A: Slightly reddish with a decent head and lacing that sticks fairly well. S: The aroma of all the types of pepper is quite appetizing. T: While the pepper was good in the smell, there’s just a little too much going on here--it’s simply overpowering. Aside from the pepper, I can pick out some sweetness and a little bit of the Belgian yeast character. M: Fairly light body, but again overtaken by the pepper. D: Okay. I really like this brew in theory, but the execution was just a little bit off. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 04-24-2009

Tap @ PP Belgian Fest 09, this was pretty damn interesting, I can’t say I’ve ever had a beer like this before, it was incredible but also gnarly. Pours orange with a tan head. Nose is peppery super super peppery pretty much insane. Taste was interesting super super peppery, and overall insane.

On tap GABF 2009. I am surprised by the average ratings for this beer since I thought it was very solid. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. Aroma is sweet bready malt and loads of pepper. Flavor is insane amounts of complex pepper - apparently they used 4 different peppercorns, and you can taste it. Also some pale malt, floral hops, and herbal notes. This is as peppery as it gets. Palate is light and crisp with the pepper really tingling on the palate.
