COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
You want an IPA, you’ve got one, but with a twist. “Spring Training” breezes in like a breath of fresh air, ready to awaken your senses from a long, cold winter. Made from primarily Canadian pale malts, the recipe also incorporates Belgian carapils, aromatic and wheat malts to contribute to the beer’s complex body and straw-golden color. Ahtanum and Palisades hops were chosen for their essence of wildflowers and freshly-cut grass and to present a contrast to the piney, earthy and resiny characteristics of most IPAs. But don’t worry that these “pretty” hops won’t deliver a strong punch-in addition to extensive kettle hopping the beer is dry-hopped with 10 lbs of Ahtanums to blast your senses away.

Clear, light amber with a small white head. Sugary sweet nose with cotton candy, honey, golden fruits, diacetyl and herbal hops. The flavor is sugary sweet, lightly bitter with cotton candy, lots of herbs and flowers, some pine and honey. Medium body is round with moderate carbonation.

draft at the brewpub..... pours a golden orange brown with a minimal soapy white head around the edges.....aroma of sweet citrus and tropical hops which lend themselves more along the sweetside..... flavors of crisp, carbonated fruity/earthy hops with a mellow malt backbone. pretty balanced overall with the hops coming through in the end.

Growler, courtesy of acdrz. Thanks, Mike! Pours a clear, golden-orange color; bright white head with solid, web-like lacing. Lots of floral and citrus hops in the aroma, surrounded by some butter / butterscotch and sugar; pleasant hoppiness. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy sugar, citrus hops, and some butterscotch; strong levels of carbonation; chewy, resiny and oily hop character, but the butter and stickiness detracts a bit. Lengthy finish, showing sugar, citrus and mineral bitterness; a touch of toasty grains.

Pours a mostly clear golden colored body with a thin, frothy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is lighter with some floral fruits, a touch of caramel, and a light orange pine. Flavor is pretty citrusy up front with a slightly sweet orange pine and some floral fruits. A light caramel in the middle before the sweet pines and florals come in a bit more to dry this while still finishing a touch sweet with a moderate bitterness. Fairly lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, an ok IPA. Solid flavor with a nice mix of floral fruits and citruses. Nothing special, but enjoyable.

On tap at the brewpub. A very empty kitchen cleaner nose. Faint citrus and grass. Some juicy hop character builds. Pours a nice, glowing pale orange, even and hazed. No head. Flavor is fresh. Heavily grassy. Not too metallic. Not a really juicy or west-coast style. Ah, thanks Ahtanum and Palisade for this unique, biting hop presentation. Forward on the flavor, it just isn’t that enticing. Grassy, again. Body is fresh, clean and holds up well. Nice alcohol, clean yeast character and carbonation. A well-constructed IPA, I just don’t think at this level these hop varieties are the right ones for the job. Alcohol really lifts the hops. They’re fresh tasting, just not my favorite. Oh well, a good experience with these varieties.

Growler brought to beer tasting. Fighting back cold as I drank. Light. Crisp. Some hops. Session all the way.

Poured with an orangey huge, fairly weak initial head. The aroma was caramel, grainy, cirtus, pine. The flavor followed, some yeast and herbal notes in there, a semi-assertive bitterness to the finish, but just not a wow or exciting IPA. Pretty average run of the mill, but still enjoyable to drink in the big scheme of beer as an IPA fan. But, most of us do take those training wheels off one day.

Tap. Dry dark herbal lemon grass. Rustic hay, fresh cut grass, cucumber. Toast, burnt cracker melon malts. Wheat not so noticible. quite bitter.

Draft @ CBC - Amber, thin white fizzy head. Nose held light floral and citrus notes. Flavor was boring and pretty much the same with more florals and citrus. Not much malt to speak of here. Light bodied, soft carbonation, light citric finish. Not my kind of IPA anyway...

Draft at the Other Side cafe. Tap Handle just said "Spring IPA" but I checked CBC’s website, and the spring training was listed as a release currently. Assuming it is the same brew. Pours a bright orange color with a big fluffy white head. Nose is very big spicy hop notes, with some light pepper notes and some piney notes. Palate is crisp and refreshing with a big bitter finish in the swallow. Flavor is dominated by the hops, with a light biscuity note coming through in the end.
