Commercial Description:
Brewed with imported Scottish floor-malted barley, fresh, hand-harvested heather flowers were added to the kettle during the boil along with sweet gale, yarrow, and lavender. The aroma and flavor are a surprising jog of ancient memory, with notes of sweet gale, heather, an obscure wildflower spiciness, and a grace note of lavender, complemented by the interplay of mild but assertive, toasty-sweet malt.

On tap at GABF 2009. Clear medium amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt, herbs, spices, and floral hops. Flavor is very herbal, spicy, and floral, not really like your typical Scottish ale at all, with caramel and mild roast. Body is medium with lively carbonation and a somewhat dry finish. Pretty good overall.

GABF 2009: Strong herbal, spicy heather notes lift from this clear yellow concoction. The head atop is of the white variety. The flavors are all leafy, herbal heather and not much else.

Draft at the brewpub. Is this really supposed to be a Scottish Ale? Hmm. Could have fooled me. The body is a medium-dark amber color. A small, quick, off-white head leaves virtually no lacing behind. Aromas include a fairly neutral caramel base, with spicing that includes spruce trees, heather, lavender, pine, and ginger. There is an indiscernible nuttiness present as well. Flavors take on a very "evergreen forest" sort of feel, with pine and spruce featured prominently. Minty ginger and perfumy lavender come through again, though the nutty notes featured in the nose are replaced with a pungent, vegetal element. Medium bodied, with lively carbonation, the herbal, almost medicinal finish is a bit off-putting. Simply put, this is not my cup of tea.

Hand-bottled. A light amber beer with a thin white head. The aroma is very spicy with notes of nutmeg, heather, and lavender, as well as a slight acidity. The flavor is slighlty acidic with strong notes of spices; heather, lavender, and milfoil (rølikke), leading to a very dry finish.

8th Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines. Pours clear amber with a small, fizzy, off-white head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (bread, grain), average hops (herbs, grass), average yeast (earth) with notes of heather and apple. Light bodied, thin texture, flat carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.
