Arriving in time to greet the new year is our deceptively efficacious Belgian strong ale. Golden-straw color, effervescent condition, and commingling flavors and aromas of curacao orange, coriander, yeasty fruit esters and phenols, a subtle malt base, and a warming, slightly hoppy finish. Served proudly in its own tulip-shaped glass, this perennial was the first Belgian-style beer produced in American craft-brewing history according to the beer Hunter, Michael Jackson. Don’t miss it!

Bomber from Whole Foods in Davis, CA. Pours hazy golden amber with a slight foamy white head. Aroma of light seeded fruit with some light stone fruit esters. A little candi. Lots of things here, but it suggests a tripel aroma. Med + body. It all coalesces into candi, mild touch of treacle, fruity esters. Malt too. But malt is not the hilite. Just when I think it’s going to finish sweet, the sugar drains away, and it suggests dry. There’s some phenolic aspects, but they are pretty covered by the candi and esters. Very enjoyable.

Bottle shared by Dr Silverworm. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy white head that lasted with good lacing. Complex sweet citrus and yeast aroma. Medium to abundant body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy citrus sweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a refreshing beer.

Bomber poured a clear tarnished gold with a lasting ivory head. Aromas of straw, yeast, pear, light pineapple and a hint of spice. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a smooth dry finish. Flavors of straw, yeast, light pear and light spice with a smooth dry lingering straw finish.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Mile High Denver. Pours a hazy golden orange appearance with a white head. Somewhat spicy yeasty (but definitely held well within check), light banana, citrusy, wheat aroma. Flavor is quite smooth and true to the style with notes of tangerines, lemon, banana, coriander, and black pepper. Nothing too fantastic but a decent offering for the style.

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2013 My Bottom Line :
Alcohol, floral honey leading a plump body into cereals and herbal bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sheet of foam sticks to the peachy golden mist.
-This is not as ester-y as Allagash’s Tripel Reserve, for example.
-Carbonation is lower than the average Tripel’s.
-Quiet finish.
-Alcohol is a bit too present for my tastes.
-The spiciness is not overdone, which I appreciate.

Bottle, and on tap at the brewpub.

Thus far I have been impressed with Cambridge beers. This one, from Frank Smith’s, Pours dark straw with clingy off-white head. Nose is caramel malt, old aley yeasty esters, hopcitrus, some spice. Tastes dry, floral, with notes of hopcitrus, some funky esters, and finishing dry florals and white peppery spice.

22oz bottle, from Dutch’s. Shared with local raters. Mostly clear orange color. Minimal off-white head. No lace sticks. Smooth, lightly soft lighter carbonation. Lightly sticky finish. Nice belgian yeast character, banana, spice. Taste is mostly sweet, has a bit of light alcohol warmth to it. Alright belgian tripel, not my favorite American example. Not the most complex nor well-integrated.

Bomber shared by Joy - thanks! Somewhat murky orange pour with a cream-white head. Fruity esters and some yeast. Pretty rich. Quite nice.
