3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at Earth Eagle (Portsmouth, NH) for International Gruit Day. I tried this as part of a tasting of three or four gruits, and a few things stood out in comparison. There are a lot of ingredients, spices, and grains at work in this, and it tastes really rich and just a little muddled. It’s definitely one-of-a-kind, though, and I definitely enjoyed it.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Translucent brown with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, caramel, raisins, rosemary, and light apples. Taste of toffee, dark fruits, spices, and a semi-sweet finish.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours mostly clear amber copper with a small gray head that dissipates quickly. Aroma brings light sweet malts and herbs. Flavors bring nutty amber malts that turn a tad sweet and then the gruit continues with some bitterness and herbs.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
$6.99 for a 22 oz. Bottle. Batch 1, April 2012. 5.5%. Amber in color. No head, flat Co2. Nose is all rosemary.
The flavor is an variety of ginger, rosemary and some type of odd flower. I’m not a fan of ginger root and I pick it up a lot. Doesn’t help the rating.
Overall it’s more like drinking a chilled herbal tea and not a.beer. This was my 2nd or third gruit and unfortunately this doesn’t make me want to run out and try more of the style.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours deep mahogany into a Sam glass. Mocha head with good retention crackles and recedes leaving no lacing. Sweet summer herb aromas. Slightly tart front to back with earthy caramel and bread upfront turning to mild lasting herb finish. A nice change.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
One of the more vile things Ive had in a while. Was there something wrong with this? Tasted like sea weed straight from the long island sound. Salty, fishy, algae, with a splash of italian seasoning. Bad

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz. bottle purchased at the brewpub. Pours a hazy deep amber with a fizzy thin-moderate off-white head that vanished before I could take my first sip. There are lots of carbonation bubbles rushing to the surface. Looks more like a soda than a beer. The aroma is spice and not much else really. The flavor is malt with some sweetness to it along with a strong dose of spice. Heavy carbonation. An interesting beer to try but not something I would likely seek out again.
