COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gruit is primarily a combination of three herbs: sweet gale (Myrica gale), yarrow (Achillea millefolium), and wild rosemary (Ledum palustre). Additionally, individual brewers would add other herbs and spices as they liked to produce unique flavors and aromas in their beer. These herbs were known for their mildly stimulating properties, and when added to fermented beer were known to have said inebriating qualities amplified.

On tap at the brewpub. My first gruit, I believe. A very fruity, complex and unique profile. I like herbal in beer and this has a subtle herbal tint to it, without feeling overspiced in any one direction. Somehow this manages to taste hot, bubblegummy, and homebrew-sweet in the end. Some rough edges smoothed would make this very interesting.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours hazy dark orange with a small off-white head. Aroma is light caramelish and herbal. Grassy, herbal and spiced flavoured. Rosemary, nettle and some liqourice. Dry, malty and spiced finish. Herbal and caramelish malty finish. Grows on me and likely the best none-hopped brew.

Pours dark amber with notes of spices that drive into a malty and herbacious mouthfeel. I thought I would not like this but it really played of the malts very nicely.

Draft. Dark amber pour with some light head. Spices over take flavor, with some light fruit and oak flavor in the background. Rosemary and lavender spices really fill your nose.

AGAquino (662) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - APR 27, 2010
On tap at Cambridge Brewing. Slightly dark ambar color, with no head or lace. Has no hops, but bitter is present. Floral aroma and flavor, somewhat vegetal, but very nice strange brew

A Sim rate (Tap at the brewpub): Smells of sage & rosemary, thyme & coriander. Spiced like a Belgian Christmas beer. So overwhelmingly spiced. Again in the flavour it’s just too spiced. Sage & rosemary again. Very Belgiany hops & malt.

Draft at the Brewpub. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Lavender, ginger, and birch. Loads of spices that overshadow everything else in the beer. A flavorful explosion of spices that can be a bit overbearing with such a low ABV.

Dickinsonbeer (5076) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - FEB 22, 2010
Tap at EBF 2010. Pours a nice hazy medium copper- a bit darker than some gruits- decent head which fades a bit. Aroma is earthy, herbal, lightly spicy, very flowery with ginger, grass, rosemary, almost a lemongrass hint, and a bit of lavender- light toasted malts and mineral. Flavor is a bit funked out, toasted malts, earth, mineral, grassy, flowery- almost a hibiscus fruity flower pepper, herbs, with a bit of mustiness. Flavor is mostly clean- a bit of astringency and bitter from the herbs and spices but is pretty nice overall.

From the Jug at the GABF Colorado Convention Center, Denver 11/10/2008 Floral and herby aroma. Golden coloured fruity and a little rich on the palate. Crisp and slightly dry malt finish.

Hazy, powdery looking orange. Based upon the description I’m expecting some thing rather special however the smell is rather easy. Hints or charcoal and liqorice. It actually smells of refried beans. Big green oregano flavours with orange juice that is on the turn and a tongue numbing absinthe touch. There is depth here with slight sourness and dusky rose petal floral notes. Pickles? Unfortunately watery. An interesting beer utilizing many pre-hop flavourings. Really green and in truth, highly exciting.16
