COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Keg & Bottle;
Helles and Pilsner combine – the pale, crisp body of Pils with the gentle hop profile of Helles. It’s pale gold, refined, elegant and dry. Soft biscuity malt, a light lemony, peppery hop character and the sort of bitterness which quenches and never overpowers. Matured for a long time in tank, it’s how a great lager should taste.

Small white head. Pale yellow body with carbonation. Mealy fruity floral aroma. Dry-sweet strawy mealy taste with resiny fruity watery notes. Mid-to-light body. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish fruity resiny mealy aftertaste with herbal notes. Lingering mealy dusty strawy finish. Not bad, but a bit watery and boring. (0.568l cask at Truscott Arms, London.)

Fast becoming the standard craft lager of London. Reliable, enjoyable, trendy!

Quite refreshing. Grassy hops with a little citrus and a lightly carbonated body. Smooth malts. Very little sweetness.

330 ml can from Ales By Mail, served in a shaker glass. Very pale yellow, quite clear, with a small slightly off-white head. On the nose light cereals, some white bread, wet hay and a mild grassy hoppiness. Much sweeter than expected, but not overwhelming or artificial-like. Malty and slightly lemony aftertaste. Not much bitterness to speak of. Fortunately soft carbonated, which helps the drinkability a lot. Light to medium body and slightly creamy texture. Decent, inoffensive and thirst quenching beer., plus quite cheap and in a great looking can. Can’t really complain.

Sample at a tasting. Golden body with a white medium head. Quite unpleasant and sour. Really not my type of beer.

33cl bottle from Stockbridge Tap. Appearance - golden with a gentle bubble and a thin but attractive layer of lace. Nose - sweetcorn, perhaps even green beans. Taste - more green beans, some lemon on the finish. Palate - light to medium bodied, a good malt backbone, clean but not being too zingy, which is correct for this style. Overall - wow, that brings the count to 2 Helles beers outside Germany which I’ve enjoyed. The brewer has achieved what he set out to do here and the many other low scores that this beer seems to have received do not reflect the success of the brewer. It’s not Paulaner or Augustiner, but it’s very well brewed.
